Warriors Owner Issues Murky Update on Steve Kerr’s Future

The Golden State Warriors are fresh off a disappointing 2025-26 campaign, and there are going to be some big changes made this offseason. While the Warriors have become accustomed to continually tinkering with their roster around Stephen Curry, changes could be made to the coaching staff as well this time around, with head coach Steve Kerr‘s future very much up in the air.

For months, rumors have swirled suggesting that Kerr could step down as Golden State’s coach this offseason, and that train of thought has only picked up more steam after the team missed out on the playoffs entirely this year. The Dubs are currently trying to figure things out with Kerr, with team owner Joe Lacob making an eye-opening admission on his status.

Kerr took over as the Warriors’ head coach ahead of the 2014-15 campaign, and he promptly turned them into a dynasty. Golden State has won four NBA championships during Kerr’s time in charge, and while the players will largely be credited for the team’s success, Kerr has done a stellar job at managing big personalities belonging to guys like Draymond Green, Kevin Durant, and Jimmy Butler over the years.

The 2025-26 season was a challenge for Kerr, as Curry missed more than half the season with a lingering right knee injury, while Butler tore his ACL in January. That forced Kerr to improvise in an effort to try to find a way to keep the team afloat, but ultimately, Butler’s season-ending injury proved to be too much to overcome.

This season was taxing on Kerr, and reports have indicated that he could opt to step away from the team and allow it to find a new leader. Nothing is set in stone yet, though, hence the aforementioned discussions between Kerr and the team. Lacob refused to provide any sort of clarity on the process, though, when he was recently asked when the Warriors could make a final decision on Kerr’s status as the team’s head coach.

“Appearing at a Sportico conference Wednesday in San Francisco, Warriors owner Joe Lacob would only say that Kerr’s status could be decided ‘today, tomorrow or in three weeks,’” NBA insider Marc Stein shared in a post on X.

The head coach carousel is already spinning across the NBA, so if the Warriors decide to move on from Kerr, they aren’t going to want to be left in the dust. We’ve already seen the Milwaukee Bucks hire Taylor Jenkins as their new head coach, and the Orlando Magic have recently begun a search for Jamahl Mosley’s replacement after firing him in the wake of their playoff exit.

On the surface, it seems like Golden State is dragging its feet when it comes to making a decision on Kerr’s future, when in reality, it should be aiming to get things figured out in this department as soon as possible. The longer the Warriors wait, the more of a disadvantage they put themselves at, which is why Kerr’s status looms so large, even though the offseason has only just gotten underway.
