The Minnesota Vikings and New York Jets are in different situations heading into the 2026 NFL Draft. However, there are also a lot of similarities between the two franchises.
Both teams are looking to be aggressive this offseason with the goal of pushing into the playoffs next season. They both missed the playoffs during the 2025 NFL season.
With the 2026 NFL Draft coming up quickly, a suggested trade would see the two teams come together on a major trade that would shake up the first round.
Brevan Bane of Purple PTSD has suggested a potential move that would see the Vikings trade out of the first round.
In his trade proposal, Minnesota would ship the No. 18 overall pick and the No. 196 overall pick in exchange for picks No. 33 and No. 44. The Vikings would be adding the first pick in the second round and another second-round pick, which could be exactly what the doctor ordered for the roster.
Why the Move Makes Sense for the Minnesota Vikings
At the end of the day, Minnesota needs to add more talent to its roster. Unfortunately, the Vikings do not have a great financial situation.
Trading down to add an extra second-round pick would accomplish two things. They would not have to pay first-round draft pick money and they could add two quality players in the second round with the picks received from the Jets.
Looking at the upcoming draft class, there are quite a few players who would be excellent targets for Minnesota in the second round. Moving down from No. 18 to No. 33 would cause the Vikings to miss out on a few higher-tier players, but not a franchise changing talent.
Adding an extra second-round pick would make this a winning scenario for Minnesota.
Why the Move Makes Sense for the New York Jets
Currently, New York holds two first-round picks. The Jets have the No. 2 overall pick, which is their own, and they also have the Indianapolis Colts‘ pick at No. 16 overall from the Sauce Gardner trade.
Being able to add three first-round players would help New York make a push in 2026.
For the Jets to become a contender once again, they need impact players. They need players who can come in as rookies and play a key role. The first round obviously offers more potential of finding that kind of player.
Walking out of the 2026 NFL Draft with three first-round talents would be intriguing. New York would have to be interested in pulling the trigger on this kind of trade with the Vikings.
