Vikings Invite Ex-Cowboys Starting QB to Rookie Minicamp for Tryout

Longtime Dallas Cowboys quarterback Cooper Rush has yet to find a new job this offseason. This weekend, he will try to earn one with the Minnesota Vikings.

The Vikings included Rush on their list of quarterback tryouts at the team’s rookie minicamp. Minnesota will hold its rookie minicamp from May 8-9.

Team insiders from ESPN, Kevin Seifert, and The Athletic, Alec Lewis, both highlighted Rush trying out for the Vikings on their social media accounts.

“Vikings don’t have a drafted rookie QB, so Cooper Rush will be among the ‘tryout’ passers at camp today,” wrote Seifert.

Rush will try out for the Vikings along with fellow signal-caller Aidan Bouman, who played at South Dakota last season.

Rush spent parts of eight seasons over two stints with the Cowboys from 2017-24. He briefly left the team and signed with the New York Giants during 2020.

Over his second Cowboys stint, Rush started 14 games, going 9-5 with 20 passing touchdowns and 10 interceptions.

Last season, Rush played for the Baltimore Ravens. He lost both of his starts as a replacement for Lamar Jackson.

Rush experienced success late in his Cowboys tenure. He went 4-1 as a starter during 2022.

But he played poorly in his two Ravens starts during October last season.

Rush completed 14 of 20 passes in Week 5 versus the Houston Texans, but three of his six incompletions were interceptions. The Texans defeated the Ravens 44-10.

The following week, the Ravens offense scored only three points with Rush behind center. The quarterback completed 11 of 19 passes but for only 72 yards with a pick.

Rush finished the season with a 65.4% completion percentage while only averaging 5.8 yards per attempt. He also had zero touchdowns and four interceptions.

The Ravens released Rush in March. The quarterback had yet to garner any interest in free agency until he resurfaced at Minnesota’s rookie minicamp Friday.

The Vikings added Kyler Murray in NFL free agency this offseason. But the team didn’t part with either J.J. McCarthy or Carson Wentz. The Vikings also still have 2025 undrafted free agent quarterback Max Brosmer on their roster.

That gives the team a full quarterback room. For Rush to get a roster spot, the Vikings are likely going to have to part with Brosmer next week.

Even if that happens, though, Rush will face long odds for a Minnesota roster spot with Murray, McCarthy and Wentz already in the fold.

With his social media post, Seifert appeared to be suggesting the Vikings invited Rush to minicamp to help the team run drills with its first-year offensive players.

Minnesota didn’t draft a receiver, but the team signed four undrafted rookie wideouts. Rush is likely to throw passes to all of them on May 8 and 9.

Vikings Offseason Program Schedule

After Saturday, the Vikings, along with the rest of the league, will have a short break from organized team activities. The team will come back together for its next offseason workout after Memorial Day weekend.

That phase will run from May 26-29. The Vikings will also have offseason workouts from June 1-4 and again from June 15-18.

In between the second and third round of offseason workouts, the Vikings will host their mandatory minicamp from June 9-11.

After June 18, the Vikings will break for the summer. Minnesota’s 2026 training camp will likely begin around July 20. The team’s training camp started with rookies reporting on that date last year.
