Vikings Get Great News On Justin Jefferson’s Contract Situation

The Minnesota Vikings recently got some fantastic news that makes their major investment in Justin Jefferson look even better.

Early Monday morning, the Seahawks agreed to an extension with superstar WR Jaxon Smith-Njigba. Adam Schefter covered it for ESPN.

“Jaxon Smith-Njigba, the reigning NFL Offensive Player of the Year, has reached agreement with the Seattle Seahawks on a four-year, $168.6 million contract extension that makes him the highest-paid wide receiver in NFL history, sources told ESPN.

The deal averages $42.15 million per year and includes over $120 million guaranteed, both setting records for a wide receiver.”

Schefter also detailed that this deal keeps JSN in Seattle through the 2031 season. So, why is that good news for the Vikings regarding Justin Jefferson?

With Smith-Njigba’s new deal, he becomes the highest-paid wide receiver in NFL history. This was a label that Jefferson touted when he signed his extension with Minnesota ahead of the 2024 NFL season.

With the average of $42.15 million per season, Smith-Njigba takes over Ja’Marr Chase’s spot as the highest paid receiver in the NFL by yearly average.

Per OverTheCapJustin Jefferson now falls to the 4th-highest paid receiver in the NFL by yearly average. This is a huge win for the Vikings and the receiver who some still believe is the best at his position in the NFL.

Horoscope for Tuesday, March 03, 2026

Consider the updated list of the top-paid receivers by average annual value after the Smith-Njigba re-signing.

  • Jaxon Smith-Njigba (SEA) – $42.15 million
  • Ja’Marr Chase (CIN) – $40.25 million
  • Calvin Ridley (TEN) – $35.25 million
  • Justin Jefferson (MIN) – $35 million
  • CeeDee Lamb (DAL)  – $34 million

Jefferson does still bring in the most money guaranteed annually per his contract structure. However, that overall yearly number can still be exceeded. The Vikings also recently restructured his contract this offseason to bring his cap number down.

Pro Football Focus recently released a list compiling every NFL team’s most valuable trade asset. For the Vikings, Jordan Addison’s name was drawn.

The Vikings don’t have many top-tier trade assets, but Addison stands out as a potential candidate. A former first-round pick, he has flashed early in his career but has yet to surpass 1,000 receiving yards in a season and struggled with drops in 2025.

The talent is evident, and a contending team in need of a WR2 or WR3 could benefit from his skill set. With Minnesota needing to add depth on defense, moving Addison could bring back valuable assets to help address those areas.”

While potential trade compensation conversations can only be speculative, there is an idea of what it could be. A likely haul for Minnesota would be comparable to what the Steelers got when they traded George Pickens to Dallas.

In that deal, the Cowboys sent the Steelers a 2026 3rd rounder and 2027 5th rounder in exchange for Pickens and a 2027 6th rounder.
