Victor Wembanyama Gets Important Update After Injury vs 76ers

Monday night’s matchup between the San Antonio Spurs and the Philadelphia 76ers didn’t feature a full night of Victor Wembanyama.

After two injury scares, the Spurs weren’t taking any chances following the second one. Wembanyama was ruled out for the remainder of the game due to a rib-related issue.

By exiting the game 16 minutes in, the Spurs’ star center places himself in dangerous territory. Wembanyama is suddenly flirting with trouble on the 65-game front. Monday’s action on April 6 is Wembanyama’s 63rd game of the year.

via Jared Weiss, The Athletic: Victor Wembanyama (left rib contusion) has been ruled out for the rest of the night by the Spurs after he took a fall in the first half. He played 16 minutes, so this counts as one of his two “near-miss” exemptions to the 20-minute threshold on the 65-game rule.

Wembanyama has to play for at least 20 minutes in one of the Spurs’ final games in order to satisfy the rule, making him eligible to win awards.

The Spurs have just three games left on the schedule after their matchup against the 76ers on Monday night.

On Wednesday, April 8, the Spurs will host the Portland Trail Blazers. For the Friday, April 10 game, the Dallas Mavericks will pay a visit to San Antonio. On Sunday, April 12, the Spurs will host the Denver Nuggets for their official season finale.

At this stage of the season, it would be ideal for the Spurs to allow Wembanyama to heal from all of his ailments with some games off—or even limited minutes. However, with the star center clearly motivated to earn end-of-year nods, Wembanyama will find himself fighting for a 20-plus-minute shift in at least one of the final games.

Wembanyama is in the running for several major awards, such as MVP, Defensive Player of the Year, and All-NBA.

In 62 games, Wembanyama has shot 50.9% from the field and 35.0% from three, averaging 24.9 points per game. He also came down with 11.6 rebounds and blocked 3.1 shots per game.

The Spurs Are In Good Standing

While Wembanyama wants and deserves his individual nods, at least the Spurs are in good standing regardless of what happens throughout the final week.

Heading into the game against the Sixers, the Spurs were the No. 2 seed in the Western Conference with a 59-19 record. San Antonio was 3.0 games behind the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Either way, the Spurs will be in good standing for the playoffs, garnering a top-two seed.
