Georgia Bulldogs football players, linebackers Chris Cole and Darren Ikinnabon, have been arrested for reckless and unsafe driving. The linebackers only add to a long list of the program’s players who have been arrested for driving charges in recent years during head coach Kirby Smart’s tenure.
Both Cole and Ikinnabon were arrested by Athens-Clarke County police on Wednesday February 18, 2026 and released on bond the same night. Now the two players have each shared a message addressing the incident and expressing their thoughts about their actions.

Taking to his account on X, Chris Cole shared the following statement:
“I want to address the situation from yesterday in Athens. I recognize the seriousness of this matter and the responsibility that comes with representing the University of Georgia and our football program. I understand that there are high standards for how we conduct ourselves, and I take that responsibility very seriously. I deeply regret the impact and negative attention this as caused for my coaches, teammates, and family. As I continue to grow and develop as a young man, I am focused on making better decisions and learning from every experience. I respect the process and will cooperate fully as the matter is reviewed. I remain committed to upholding the values of our program and conducting myself in a way that reflects positively on my coaches, teammates, family and the fans who support us so passionately.”

Darren Ikinnagbon also took to his X account to issue a statement addressing the situation. Using the same black background and white text notes-style format as Cole used for curating his digital statement, Ikinnagbon issued the following message:
“I want to apologize for my actions and the poor decision I made yesterday in Athens. As a member of the University of Georgia football team, I recognize that my behavior fell short of the standards expected from anyone who represents this program. Our coaches always preach responsibility and accountability, and I regret not living up to that standard. I’m truly sorry for disappointing my coaches, teammates, family, and our incredible fans. This has been a touch and embarrassing lesson for me, and I’m committed to learning from it, making smarter decisions, and earning back your trust through my actions moving forward.”
As both Cole and Ikinnagbon release their statements expressing ‘regret’ and apologizing for their actions, Kirby Smart is coming under scrutiny for the ongoing issues involving Georgia football players being arrested for driving charges and his ineffective disciplinary philosophy. Smart’s case-by-case approach to handling incidents with the program’s players and his attitude of treating the players as young student-athletes who are merely inexperienced drivers have come under fire before as past incidents have occurred, and it’s likely that the frustration with his disciplinary structure will continue to mount with the arrests of Cole and Ikinnagbon.
