The wreck in the westbound direction just east of Interstate 80 marked the second fatality of 2024 on what has been Contra Costa County’s deadliest highway the past two  years. There were 15 fatal crashes a year ago on Highway 4, resulting in the death of 18 people, and 43 fatal wrecks that killed 52 in 2022 and 2023.

The CHP responded to Sunday’s crash about 11:55 p.m. In a statement, the agency said a gray Jeep Wrangler and a silver Buick Regal collided. Neither car had a passenger.

The driver of the Buick died at the scene. The Jeep’s driver was not injured. Only the Jeep driver was wearing a seat belt, the CHP said.

Authorities did not identify the Buick’s driver, pending notification of relatives.

The CHP said it is still investigating the crash and urged any witnesses who may have been in the area before or after it occurred to contact their Contra Costa office at 320investigations@chp.ca.gov or 925-646-4980.
