The New York Yankees look like a true World Series contender this season, and the team could look to make some bold moves.
If New York continues to play well, the Yankees could make some bold trades to bolster the offense. MLB analyst Ryan Shea of SI has a trade idea that sees New York acquiring Fernando Tatis Jr. from the San Diego Padres in a stunning blockbuster.
Yankees acquire:
- Fernando Tatis Jr.
Padres acquire:
- Jasson Dominguez
- Spencer Jones
- Clarke Schmidt
- Oswaldo Cabrera
The proposed five-player blockbuster would be a stunning deal and would immediately solidify the Yankees as favorites to win the American League.
It would be a high price to pay, as Dominguez and Jones look like future MLB-caliber outfielders, while Schmidt is a legit MLB starter, and Cabrera is a good utility player. Overall, the Padres get four MLB players for Tatis, who helps the Yankees’ offense.
Tatis could play right field and shift Aaron Judge to center, and Trent Grisham as the fourth outfielder. Or, the Yankees could shift Tatis back to shortstop and fill that hole, which could be an intriguing move.
Tatis is in the midst of his 14-year, $340 million deal, as he will be a free agent at the end of the 2034 season, so San Diego also gets to save money. He’s a three-time MLB All-Star, two-time Gold Glove Award winner, and two-time Silver Slugger.
Analyst Explains Blockbuster Yankees-Padres Swap
The proposed trade would be a blockbuster and would shake up the entire MLB.
Shea believes the Yankees have to start getting aggressive, and Tatis would help the team be a true World Series contender. So, although it’s a heavy price to pay, Shea believes it’s worth it for the Yankees.
“The Yankees would make this trade for Fernando Tatis Jr. because he is a game-changing superstar who can immediately elevate their lineup and maximize their win-now window,” Shea wrote. “Tatis offers elite power, speed, and on-base ability, making him a cornerstone for championship contention and a key strategic upgrade in right field. …
“The trade also aligns with the Yankees’ win-now philosophy. Beyond on-field performance, Tatis is a marketable, franchise-altering player in a big market like New York, boosting fan engagement, media attention, and fantasy dominance. By prioritizing immediate impact over long-term development, the Yankees strengthen both their championship chances and their overall roster profile.”
As for the Padres, Shea believes the team could look to be sellers and get off some of the big contracts, like Tatis. So, San Diego gets four cost-controllable players to help rebuild and reshape its core.
New York has Been Linked to Tatis
Tatis’ name was hinted at as a potential trade candidate this offseason as the Padres could clear salary.
If Tatis is indeed available, Yankees insider Chris Kirschner of The Athletic said the team would be in the mix during his offseason mailbag.
“The Padres have “no reason” to trade Tatis right now, but if payroll concerns push San Diego to make him available, the Yankees should immediately jump in,” Kirschner wrote.
So, where there is smoke, there is fire, and perhaps a Tatis trade could happen and the Yankees would be all over it.
