Toronto Blue Jays Make George Springer Roster Announcement, Former Silver Slugger DFA’d

The Toronto Blue Jays made a pair of very notable roster decisions on Wednesday before their series finale with the Boston Red Sox. After getting starting pitcher Trey Yesavage back from injury, the Jays are getting more positive reinforcements on Wednesday.

As the Blue Jays continue to creep back towards the .500 mark (currently 13-16), they have been one of the most injured teams in MLB. On Wednesday, the team announced notable decisions on George Springer and Eloy Jiménez.

Before the Red Sox game on Wednesday, the Blue Jays’ social media team announced that George Springer is being activated from the injured list and that Eloy Jimenez is being designated for assignment. Springer has been activated, but is not in the Blue Jays lineup upon immediate return. Maybe he can be available off the bench for John Schneider in Wednesday’s game.

MLBTradeRumors.com’s Darragh McDonald wrote (on April 29):

“It’s the inverse of a transaction from a couple of weeks ago. Springer fractured a bone in his left big toe when he fouled a ball off of his foot. On April 12th, he was placed on the IL, with Jiménez selected to take his place on the roster. Now that Springer is healthy enough to return, Jiménez has been bumped off.”

Eloy Jimenez has struggled this season in 31 at-bats. He’s hitting .290 technically, but also has zero extra base hits and just nine hits in 12 games. He was always going to be designated when George Springer returned. He previously won a Silver Slugger award with the Chicago White Sox, but didn’t play in MLB in 2025, and has struggled to be productive long-term as a hitter.

George Springer as a Blue Jays Outfielder…

George Springer fractured his big toe about two and a half weeks ago, but never went on a rehab assignment.

He went through normal progress as the Blue Jays trainers advised him to, and now will look to help this Toronto team win some upcoming games.

In 14 games with the Blue Jays this season, Springer is hitting .185 with two HR’s, four doubles, and a 0.1 bWAR. It was a slow start for Springer, but he’s been a rock in the Blue Jays’ order for the last four seasons. Since 2022, George Springer has played 130+ games in each season.

Overall, in 2522 at-bats with the Jays over six seasons, Springer is hitting .261 with 121 home runs and 344 RBI.

He’s been a great Blue Jays outfielder and was a huge reason Toronto advanced to the World Series last year.

As the Blue Jays look to turn their season around, which many believe they will, adding Springer will go a long way in ensuring more success for Toronto.
