Top WWE Star Says Current Pat McAfee Storyline “Sucks”

Former WWE World Heavyweight Champion Damian Priest buried the current WrestleMania 42 storyline of Pat McAfee entering the Cody Rhodes vs Randy Orton feud. McAfee was revealed as the mystery caller who was advising Orton into doing his controversial actions against the top star. Reports indicate that TKO stepped in as WWE ownership to request McAfee get pushed in a major role.

Priest shared a negative reaction during an interview with Gabby LaSpisa:

“It sucks. Not a fan. You know, somebody who knows Pat, get along with him. But for me, that’s not my taste. I don’t think it helps anything. He didn’t need it. So for me, and, you know, I’m sure a lot of people aren’t going to be happy that I said that, but in the locker room specifically, like a lot of us weren’t happy and that’s real.

For me, that’s like one of those things that so many other talent, even from one word, can benefit. And it’s like, wow, now they’re up here. Instead, you take somebody who’s not even here all the time and gets away with saying something like that, who doesn’t even need it. Not going to lie, it kind of pissed me off.”

Priest did not hold back his feelings and made it clear that a part-time non-wrestler getting such a major role rubbed him the wrong way. Most of the locker room feels let down by this decision heading into the biggest weekend of the year.

Why WWE Wrestlers Hate Pat McAfee’s Storyline

WWE already had a great match on paper to main event the first night of WrestleMania. Orton and Rhodes have yet to have a feud since the former returned to WWE a couple of years and became a massive star.

Both men worked together over a decade ago in the Legacy faction to create an easy mentor vs protégé storyline. Rhodes learned from Orton and got his first major break in WWE by learning from the legend in main event storylines together.

Fans were content with this story and Orton’s heel turn setting up an exciting match. The story has now pivoted to Orton following McAfee to make him feel less credible. Rhodes also comes off poorly feuding against a broadcaster as a top angle for WrestleMania.

Can WWE Fix This Failing Situation?

Negative fan reaction made this a big story last week since WWE hyped up the mystery man behind Orton for months. Fans expected a bigger name like Shane McMahon or The Rock to play into the family topic referenced.

Priest and many other WWE stars have joined fans in feeling let down by TKO forcing their hand into WWE’s storylines. McAfee is not expected to wrestle at WrestleMania 42, but he is reportedly planned to continue working alongside Orton after the event.

WWE must find a way to make McAfee’s presence more valued in the storyline. Musician Jelly Roll helping Rhodes against Orton and McAfee is expected to be the payoff, but WWE’s audience is not looking forward to that. Triple H must make changes ahead of WrestleMania to ensure this angle has any chance of success.
