Timberwolves Get Bad News With ‘Significant’ Injury Update For Game 6 Vs Spurs

The Minnesota Timberwolves are playing the San Antonio Spurs in Game 6 of their second-round series on Friday night, and according to the team’s newest injury report, they could be without one of their key players for the must-win game.

The Timberwolves’ injury report was updated ahead of Game 6, and featured backup guard Terrence Shannon Jr. listed as questionable with a head injury.

Shannon has been an on-and-off contributor for Minnesota during their playoff run, but has seen a bigger role since Donte DiVincezno went down with a torn Achilles tendon, and he would be greatly missed for Game 6 if he is eventually ruled out.

“UPDATED Minnesota @Timberwolves Status Report in advance of tonight’s Game 6 vs. San Antonio Spurs: QUESTIONABLE Shannon Jr- Head Contusion OUT DiVincenzo- Right Achilles Tendon Repair,” the team wrote in a post on X, announcing the Shannon injury update.

GettyMINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA – MAY 08: Terrence Shannon Jr. #1 of the Minnesota Timberwolves and Anthony Edwards #5 embrace against the San Antonio Spurs during the fourth quarter in Game Three of the Second Round of the NBA Western Conference Playoffs at Target Center on May 08, 2026 in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Announced before the matchup against the Spurs, the Timberwolves have Shannon listed as questionable for Game 6 with a head contusion.

Previously, DiVincenzo was the only player named on the injury report, but now the young guard’s status for the upcoming contest is in question.

According to Jon Krawczysnki of The Athletic, Shannon’s injury update is not a good sign for the Timberwolves.

“Rarely a good thing to be a late add. This would be a significant loss,” he wrote on X.

The Timberwolves haven’t been anything close to healthy in their playoff run so far, as they’ve been without Anthony Edwards and Ayo Dosunmu for multiple stretches through their first 12 postseason games.

Shannon’s status remains in question, but if he is eventually ruled out, Minnesota will likely be playing Edwards, Dosunmu, and Mike Conley as their three primary backcourt ball-handlers and playmakers.

In eight playoff games, including three starts, Shannon is averaging 10.6 points, 2.6 rebounds, and 1.4 assists on 38% shooting in 22.6 minutes per night.

GettySAN ANTONIO, TX -MAY 12: Anthony Edwards #5 of the Minnesota Timberwolves drives past Victor Wembanyama #1 of the San Antonio Spurs in the second half of Game Five of the Western Conference Semifinals NBA Playoffs at Frost Bank Center on May 12, 2026 in San Antonio, Texas.

While the Timberwolves could be without Shannon, and will obviously not see DiVincenzo play, the Spurs have a clean injury report for Game 6, as they won’t miss any of their players for the potential close-out matchup.

The momentum of the series has shifted back and forth in the first few games, but with San Antonio now holding a 3-2 lead, they are in the driver’s seat, and can advance to the conference finals with a win on Friday night.

However, according to Steve Aschburner of NBA.com, there is a way for the Timberwolves to get a crucial Game 6 win and advance the series to a winner-take-all Game 7 on Sunday night. He said that they need to get off to a hot start in Game 6, as in some of the previous games, their subpar first quarters have been the impetus for their eventual downfall.

“Five games is way past the point of any feeling-out games. Minnesota has trailed in the first quarters by seven, seven, 15, six and 15 points, and it’s no coincidence that the three times it lost the opening 12 minutes, it lost the games,” he wrote. “There have been admissions out of the Wolves’ locker room that they have been guilty of straying from their game plan, lapsing into habits or instincts that aren’t the soundest against this specific opponent. Only way to fix that would be more diligent adherence to what coach Chris Finch and his staff have drawn up.”

As for Minnesota, they will need to hope San Antonio doesn’t shoot well from three-point range, and need to do everything they can to try to stop Victor Wembanyama from having another standout performance. Rudy Gobert will continue to be huge, but the Timberwolves’ entire roster will need to step up on defense if they want any chance of keeping the Spurs and forcing a Game 7.

“Some of the stuff that Wemby was doing, you don’t really have too much of an answer for it,” Edwards said after the Timberwolves’ Game 5 loss. “Just kinda hope he misses.”

Minnesota still has a shot at making the conference finals for the third season in a row, but without Shannon, they could be facing a bit tougher of a battle.
