Tigers Named as Top Landing Spot for Star Slugger

The Detroit Tigers may not be done pursuing an additional infielder just yet. Detroit was previously heavily involved in the Alex Bregman sweepstakes. In fact, Bleacher Report’s Tim Kelly even predicted that the former Astro would join the Tigers. Nevertheless, Bregman ultimately signed a massive deal with the Chicago Cubs.

After Bregman’s price tag soared, Detroit was then loosely linked with Bo Bichette. Although the team was not a finalist for the infielder, CBS Sports reporter R.J. Anderson once claimed that the Tigers would land Bichette. Like with Bregman, Detroit opted not to break the bank on the now former Blue Jay.

While these two moves would have been extremely costly for Detroit, they could soon bring in a familiar face for much less money. Kelly has now specifically named the Tigers as a potential landing spot for Eugenio Suarez. The slugger initially began his impressive career with the club back in 2014.

Although the reporter admits that there has not been a ton of buzz between Suarez and Detroit, the move would make sense. The pursuit of Bregman clearly shows that the Tigers want an upgrade at third base. Suarez, coming off a 49-home run season, would certainly give the team more pop in the middle of the lineup.

Eugenio Suarez on Reunion with Detroit Tigers: ‘It Would be Cool’

GettyEugenio Suarez has been open to a reunion with the Detroit Tigers in the past.

The Tigers were previously linked with a reunion with Suarez ahead of the 2025 trade deadline. The star, then playing with the Arizona Diamondbacks, was asked about a move back to Detroit at the time. Suarez praised the Tigers and claimed that he would be open to the switch.”To finish where everything started, it would be cool,” stated Suarez in July. “It would mean a lot to me.”

Along with Detroit, Kelly named six other MLB teams that could land the slugger. A majority of the clubs, however, are not exactly seen as future contenders in 2026. Only the Boston Red Sox and Seattle Mariners won at least 85 regular-season games in 2025.

Suarez could still re-sign with Seattle, but a deal seems less likely each day the situation drags on. A potential move to Boston also now appears unlikely. Red Sox beat reporter Chris Cotillo revealed on January 20 that there was “very little traction” linking the club with Suarez. As a result, Detroit could give the slugger the best chance to win before he retires.

Suarez Could get Back on Track at Comerica Park

While he has his defensive issues, Suarez would be an offensive upgrade for the Tigers compared to Zach McKinstry, Jace Jung, and Colt Keith. If the slugger joins the club, McKinstry would be a very valuable super sub for manager A.J. Hinch. Keith could also be a solid option as the DH against right-handed pitchers.

One potential issue with Suarez was his decline after joining the Mariners in late 2025. Nevertheless, Seattle’s T-Mobile Park is an extremely pitcher-friendly field. Although Detroit’s Comerica Park was once seen as the same, alterations to the outfield walls have changed that. In fact, Forbes recently ranked Comerica as the seventh-best park for hitters in all of baseball.
