The momentum continues on the recruiting trail for the Alabama Crimson Tide, as the program secured a new defensive addition in the 2027 cycle. Three-star EDGE Stevan Thornton III out of Cairo, Georgia, announced his commitment to Alabama on Tuesday evening, giving head coach Kalen DeBoer another intriguing defensive piece to build around.
Thornton chose the Crimson Tide over a strong group of offers that included the Georgia Bulldogs, Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, and Florida State Seminoles, among others.
Rivals was the first to report Thornton’s commitment to the Tide.
Stevan Thornton III Recruiting Profile
Thornton enters the 2027 recruiting cycle as a developmental prospect with significant upside. According to the Rivals Industry Ranking, he is currently rated as:
- No. 1,123 overall prospect nationally
- No. 95 EDGE rusher
- No. 115 player in the state of Georgia
Standing 6-foot-6 and closing in on 200 pounds, Thornton possesses the length and frame that college programs covet at the EDGE position. While still lean, his physical tools make him a prime candidate for long-term development in Alabama’s system.
Thornton Had A Productive Junior Season
Thornton’s on-field production backs up his potential. As a junior at Cairo High School, he posted 91 total tackles, 20 tackles for loss, and 8 sacks.
His impact helped lead the Cairo Syrupmakers to a 10-win season, showcasing his ability to disrupt opposing offenses and play a key role in a winning program.
What Thornton’s Commitment Means for Alabama
Thornton becomes the fifth commitment in Alabama’s 2027 recruiting class, joining a group that includes:
- Four-star TE Colt Lumpris
- Four-star QB Trent Seaborn
- Three-star EDGE AJ Pauley
- Three-star TE Oakley Keegan
Although the class currently sits at No. 36 nationally in the Rivals Industry Team Recruiting Rankings, it is still early in the cycle. Adding a high-upside defender like Thornton aligns with Alabama’s long-standing strategy of identifying and developing elite defensive talent.
For DeBoer and his staff, this commitment represents another step in building a balanced class with both immediate impact players and long-term projects.
