The Houston Texans’ search for potential roster help went beyond kickers and punters, and even beyond specialists altogether, including former New Orleans Saints draft pick and quarterback Jake Haener and Jacksonville Jaguars counterpart Seth Henigan.
The Texans also checked in on two-time Pro Bowler Jake McQuaide.
With their three previously reported tryouts–two punters and a kicker–that is already six players, and still does not tell the full story of a busy day for the Texans.
Ex-Jaguars, Saints QBs Eye Texans Roster Spots

“#Texans worked out Jacob Bobenmoyer, Jack Browning, DeAndre Carter, Will Ferrin, Chris Freeman, Trenton Gill, Jake Haener, Seth Henigan, Jake McQuaid, Owen Wright,” KPRC 2’s Aaron Wilson reported on X on August 6.
The list includes the two quarterbacks, long snappers in McQuaide and Bobenmeyer, a kicker in Ferrin, punters in Browning, Freeman, and Gill, a receiver in Carer, and an RB in Wright.
Of that group, Gill and Haener are the only former draft picks.
Haener, 27, was a fourth-round pick, taken 127th overall by the Saints in the 2023 draft. He has thrown for 226 yards, 1 touchdown, and 1 interception so far in his career, completing 46.2% of his passes.
The Saints released Haener in January, and he signed on with the Kansas City Chiefs in February.
He is 0-1 as a starter and has played in eight regular-season contests.
Henigan is a former college free agent who has spent time with the Indianapolis Colts this offseason and the Jaguars in 2025 as a rookie. The Texans have three QBs on their roster: C.J. Stroud, Davis Mills, and Graham Mertz.
Stroud is entrenched as the Texans’ starter, while Mills is his trusted backup, albeit one in the final year of his contract. Mertz was a sixth-round selection in 2025.

The Texans’ interest in McQuaide and Bobenmeyer is noteworthy, though the Texans need at least one additional snapper with all of the legs they have in camp. McQuaide spent time with the Los Angeles Rams last season, but he has played for four other teams in his career.
Bobenmoyer spent 2025 with the Las Vegas Raiders.
Carter is another former Raider. The veteran wide receiver has accumulated over 1,300 receiving yards in his career and contributes as a returner.
Wright spent 2025 with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as a teammate of new Texans defensive lineman Logan Hall. He has mostly been a special teams contributor in his career, while the Texans lost running back and special teamer British Brooks to a broken hand.
If one thing is clear, it is that the Texans are looking to create competition across the roster.
They have it at several positions early on in training camp, which figures to only make one of the NFL’s best teams even better.
