Tampa Bay Lightning Captain Breaks Silence After Missing Playoffs

Tampa Bay Lightning captain Victor Hedman has released a statement after missing the playoffs for personal reasons.

“I’ve spent most of my life in this game, and nearly all of my career with this organization. Wearing this jersey—and serving as captain—is the greatest responsibility of my professional life,” the statement began.

“That responsibility doesn’t only apply on the ice. Over the past couple of months, I made the decision to step away and focus on my mental health. It was not an easy decision, but it was the right one. I’ve always believed that being a leader means doing what’s best for the team. In this case, it also meant doing what was necessary to take care of myself, so I can be the best player, teammate, husband and father I expect to be,” Hedman continued.

“I’ve been fortunate to have strong support from my family, my teammates and the organization, my therapist, and I’m in a much better place today. This is something that exists in our game more than people see. If this moment helps make it easier for others to take care of themselves when they need to, that matters. I’m proud of this team, and I look forward to what’s ahead,” the statement concluded.

Bolts Fans Showed Hedman Support

There had been a great deal of speculation surrounding Hedman’s absence, with many wondering if he was injured. While many have wished the best for Hedman, fans are now sending love and support after reading his statement.

“So happy to hear you’re getting help and thank you for your courage to share it, as well as proud to have a great organization supporting you and your teammates! Hope to see you next season ready to defend and score. God bless you and your family. Go Bolts,” one person commented on the Lightning’s Facebook post.

“I’m thankful for his honesty and bravery. Im sorry he’s had to go through this. I hope and pray he gets himself in the best physical, mental and emotional shape and can come back next season and lead the team to more greatness…. I’ll admit I thought he might need to retire and have been a bit critical of his on ice performance, but he’s always been a great man and I wish him and his family nothing but love and happiness,” someone else wrote.

“So proud of Heddy. You don’t owe anyone an explanation but speaking up helps bring awareness to the struggle so many people go through in sports and out. You have the respect of everyone who is a true fan for taking care of yourself because that is the most important thing. You continue to be an excellent role model and I am proud to support you. For all of us that are in this same boat, one day at a time,” a third comment read.
