Tampa Bay Buccaneers Sign QB With Over 10K Total Yards

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers signed Kansas quarterback Jalon Daniels in undrafted free agency after the NFL Draft on Saturday. The Buccaneers lacked a reliable backup quarterback last season with upside.

Despite signing Jake Browning in free agency, Browning struggled in his last opportunity with the Cincinnati Bengals. That caused the Bengals to trade for Joe Flacco midseason. Perhaps Daniels can win the backup quarterback job if his dual threat ability and overall arm talent can win him the job in training camp.

Daniels played six seasons at Kansas, totaling 9282 passing yards, 1445 rushing yards, 67 passing touchdowns, and 23 rushing touchdowns. He became only the second player in school history to reach over ten thousand total yards. The other player was Todd Reesing.

PFF ranked Daniels as the 240th best prospect in the NFL Draft. He received a passing grade of 72 overall. Daniels succeeded producing in all areas of the field. His intermediate passing grade was 74.7 while his deep passing grade was 92.6, an elite score. However, Daniels faltered when under pressure. His pressure grade was 44.6, but he was successful in a clean pocket (82.7).

Dane Brugler of the Athletic ranked Daniels as the 18th best quarterback in the class and graded him as an undrafted free agent. Brugler lauds Daniels’ elusiveness and explosiveness as a runner and passer respectively; however, he knocks him for his propensity for turnovers.

Brugler said, “Daniels has the ball-handling skills and intangibles that give him a chance, but his inconsistencies as a passer will be tough to overcome versus NFL speed.”

Jalon Daniels Athletic Profile

GettyDaniels has an incomplete athletic profile.

While Daniels did not complete most of the drills at the NFL Combine or the Kansas pro day, he did showcase his impressive speed for the position. He ran a 4.65 40 yard dash, a 2.69 20 yard split, and a 1.63 10 yard split. The one concern with Daniels is his height. He’s only just above 6 feet and weighs between 219-224 lbs. He will need to bulk up significantly if he hopes to be a factor in the NFL.
