If former New England Patriots wide receiver and Super Bowl MVP Julian Edelman managed to add more smoke to the rampant A.J. Brown trade rumors with a single tweet on Thursday.
With the smart money on the Philadelphia Eagles not trading Brown, a 3-time NFL All-Pro wide receiver, until after June 1 because of the dead cap implications, that doesn’t preclude them from coming to an agreement with another team before then.
The Patriots and Brown’s former head coach on the Tennessee Titans, Mike Vrabel, seem to be the most logical destination.
Edelman posted a GIF of himself on his official X account interviewing Brown for his podcast with the words “WE ARE ALL PATRIOTS” superimposed — what Edelman appears to say in the GIF — and Brown responding with a sly wink.
If it all seems a little too cute and a little too corny and cheesy, that’s understandable. For Brown and Edelman, it’s kind of par for the course. Why do things in a professional manner when you can be weird and childish about it, right? Anything for attention in this case.
It was all part of a bizarre week in which Brown disclosed he cried watching the Patriots lose to the New York Giants in Super Bowl XLII in 1 of the greatest upsets in sports history. The Patriots were trying to close out just the 2nd undefeated season in NFL history.
Brown, who is from Starkville, Mississippi, would have been just 10 years old when the game was played.
“AJ Brown played in 2 Super Bowls with the Eagles winning 1 of them and he still said his most memorable game was watching the Patriots lose as a kid … this dude really gonna retire in Foxborough lmaoo,” Eagles fan Slimm wrote on his official X account.
Patriots Seem Likely Destination for A.J. Brown
Brown wants out of Philadelphia, and the Eagles seem ready to usher him out as long as the price is right. The problem is the compensation.
One NFL trade this week may have thrown any negotiations into a tailspin after the Denver Broncos sent the No. 30 overall pick and a 2026 3rd round pick to the Miami Dolphins in exchange for wide receiver Jaylen Waddle.
While Waddle is a high-level wide receiver, he’s not in the same league as Brown. Which means the Eagles could be asking for multiple 1st round picks or even possibly the Patriots’ 1st and 2nd round picks in the 2026 draft in return.
Vrabel talked about his relationship with Brown at the NFL scouting combine.
“(Our relationship) has meant a lot,” Vrabel told reporters. “I’ve watched him grow. I’ve watched him mature. I’m proud of him… It’s a two-way street of support and reminders of what got us here today.”
Eagles Put Brakes on Trade Talks — For Now
While some favorites emerged in the race to land Brown, it seems as if nothing is going to happen for a few months.
“After serious conversations with both the Rams and Patriots, the Eagles will not trade A.J. Brown at this time, according to multiple league sources,” The Athletic’s Diana Russini wrote on her official X account on Friday. “Both teams remain interested, but no move is imminent. If a trade were to happen, it would likely heat up closer to June 1.”
Brown has been the subject of rampant trade rumors since the Eagles were upset at home by the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Wild Card Round — and following another season of Brown sniping at the franchise and his teammates through the media and, even once, on a Twitch livestream.
