Most NBA front offices build teams with the mindset that veteran postseason experience is essential for a deep championship run. The San Antonio Spurs are trying to become one of the few teams in this era to break that idea.
The NBA legend Steve Nash is prepared to claim that the Spurs have what it takes to make a big run, despite being a young franchise, headlined by young veterans.
Steve Nash Praises The San Antonio Spurs

âI always say you need common experiences and playoff scars, but if there is ever a team that can overcome that, itâs a team with Victor Wembanyama,â Nash said this week. âThis guy completely changes how everything looks on the basketball court. Letâs also talk about the other young guys. We need to talk about Stephon Castle, Dylan Harper, these guys are dogs, and they are dead serious.â
Forget best on the SpursâWembanyama is one of the best players in the league.
The 22-year-old former No. 1 pick was a clear-cut âgenerational prospectâ coming out of France, and he had all eyes on him well before he made it to the NBA.
Now that heâs here, Wembanyama is living up to the hype. Since he debuted in 2023, Wembanyama has made two All-Star games. Heâs one of the best two-way players in the game.
Beyond Wembanyama, the Spurs have one of the strongest young cores in the league. Their organization has watched their own players take home Rookie of the Year honors two seasons in a row. The Spurs managed to add another second-overall pick to the roster via the draft as well.
Oftentimes, talented young teams take some time to develop and mature in order to fit the mold of being a championship contender. Nash, a two-time MVP, views San Antonioâs roster in a different light than most.
The Spurs Are Serious
“Not only did Victor go work with monks this summer, heâs so serious about his growth and development these guys come to play every night with a seriousness. They are trimming the fat every night. Theyâre not wasting time or trying to experiment. They are trying to win games. Their combativeness and their competitiveness, and their seriousness kind of give me a little bit of a feeling that this may be a young team that can turn the corner and compete for a championship this year.â
As long as Wembanyama is healthy, the sky seems to be the limit for the Spurs. Currently, the Western Conference is home to the NBA champions (Oklahoma City Thunder), but their early lead in the race for the top speed has been cut into deeply by San Antonio over time.
Going into the March 1 matchup against the New York Knicks, the Spurs are 43-16. They trail the Thunder by just two games, as they are in the midst of an 11-game win streak.
The lack of playoff experience for San Antonioâs core members will remain a question mark until they prove otherwise, but Nash is one of the few who isnât worried about that at all for the Spursâ sake.
The legendary guard believes that Wembanyama and the Spurs could be the Westâs representative in the NBA Finals in June.
