Stefon Diggs’ Social Media Move Adds Intrigue to Patriots Situation

New England Patriots wide receiver Stefon Diggs has unfollowed the New England Patriots on Instagram. This was reported on Wednesday morning, and confirmed via search.

This could be another development in the wide receiver’s status with the Patriots. He scrubbed his social media pages earlier this week. This comes as the team and the wide receiver have several decisions to make.

An additional $6 million will be added to his 2026 salary if he is still on the roster by March 13. He currently has a $26.5 million salary cap hit. This is the second-highest on the team. Releasing him before June 1 would save the Patriots $16.8 million in cap space.

There has been buzz about his status with the organization over the past couple of days. There was a belief internally that he would return to the Patriots for the 2026 season. This was reported by the Boston Herald’s Andrew Callahan and Doug Kyed. Now, it looks like he may not return.

At the very least, he has scraped all his social media of Patriots connections, with the unfollow being the latest move.

Patriots Could Weigh Options At WR

This is certainly intriguing and interesting for Patriots fans. The wide receiver was a major part of the Patriots’ offense last season. He recorded 85 receptions for 1,013 yards and four touchdowns. He was able to bring a veteran presence to the wide receiver room.

There were questions about how he would respond following an ACL injury in October 2024. He responded in a big way and appeared up to the challenge of returning. He was able to produce for the team and did so in a big way. Furthermore, he added a veteran voice to a Patriots wide receiver room that was relatively young last season.

The Patriots appear to be in the mix with several wide receivers. A J. Brown is the hot name for the Patriots. He has been connected to them throughout the course of the offseason. Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Alec Pierce could also be an option, as the team tries to figure out their free agency plans as well.

Patriots May Need To Pivot

Either way, this doesn’t necessarily look good for the Patriots should they want Diggs to return. It would save the organization a lot of money on the books and give them more flexibility to play with down the road. However, he was the first 1,000-yard receiver since 2019. He was able to bring playmaking ability at a high level and provided some exciting moments for the team last season.

The Patriots have a decision to make, and it will not be an easy one. The deadline is fast approaching, and so is free agency. There are a lot of directions that the team can go in to improve the roster. This may mean parting ways with a player like Diggs.

On the social media level, it seems that a reunion may not be in the cards for the Patriots and the receiver. It will be interesting to see how this plays out and if social media emulates real life.
