Steelers Star Mentioned as Trade Candidate

Plenty of change has come to the Pittsburgh Steelers‘ wide receiver room in recent years. Last offseason, the team traded for Pro-Bowler DK Metcalf before trading away 1,000-yard receiver George Pickens. This offseason, the team let veteran wide receivers such as Calvin Austin III, Marquez Valdes-Scantling, and Adam Thielen walk or retire. However, to combat those losses, they traded for two-time 1,000-yard receiver Michael Pittman Jr.

Now, with 12 draft picks upcoming, the organization could be interested in adding more wide receiver help in the NFL Draft. If they do, there’s the possibility that Metcalf, whose contract needs to be reworked, could be traded, according to Bleacher Report’s Moe Moton.

The Pittsburgh Steelers Signed DK Metcalf to a Massive Extension Last Offseason After Being Traded

Here is what Moton had to say about the possibility of Metcalf being traded after the NFL Draft takes place:

“There’s almost no chance that Metcalf plays another down on his current contract. The Steelers will need to rework his deal. Perhaps those negotiations have already begun. If not, Pittsburgh may prefer a wide receiver on a rookie contract over a seven-year veteran who needs a new one coming off an inconsistent season and a recent suspension.”

After he was traded to the Steelers last offseason, Metcalf signed a five-year extension worth $150 million. Despite leading the team in receiving yards with 850, he wasn’t as dominant as he was in Seattle. Furthermore, his emotions certainly got the best of him at times, which is why he was suspended two games late in the season.

If the team can re-work his deal, the Steelers can boast one of the league’s best wide receiver duos at the right price. If not, fans could see the team replicate what it did last offseason as it traded for one star receiver just to trade another one away.

Aaron Rodgers May Have a Say Here

GettyAaron Rodgers and DK Metcalf were both first-year Steelers players in 2025.

While the future of four-time MVP and Super Bowl champion Aaron Rodgers is uncertain, seeing as he remains unsigned, could his return prevent any sort of Metcalf trade from happening? GM Omar Khan certainly has to do what is best for the team. But if you are interested in bringing back a future Hall of Fame quarterback, shouldn’t he have every option available to throw to?

An offense with Rodgers, Metcalf, Pittman, a pair of 1,000-yard scrimmage backs in Jaylen Warren and Rico Dowdle, and a versatile tight end room sounds dangerous if you’re an opposing defense. Plus, the team can still add more weapons via the NFL Draft.

If Rodgers is coming back and with the Steelers hiring an offensive-minded head coach, who has a great track record, in Mike McCarthy, why not do everything you can to put the best personnel on the field? While he can be a little frustrating, Metcalf is more than a proven player who should be trusted over a rookie who has never played a down in the NFL.
