Steelers Legend Expected to Announce Draft Pick: Report

Seeing as the NFL Draft is being hosted by the city of Pittsburgh, the Steelers are going all out in their celebration of the event. While the team itself will be working hard to capitalize on its 12 draft picks, one of their legends will be announcing one of those selections.

According to ESPN senior insider Adam Schefter, there are going to be four past and present members of the Steelers who will be announcing draft picks for the team. One of those past players is none other than Hall of Fame running back Jerome Bettis.

The Pittsburgh Steelers Made the Right Call With Jerome Bettis

Bettis will join the likes of Joey Porter Sr., Joey Porter Jr., and John Stallworth as other draft pick announcers for the Steelers in less than a week. One of the greatest organizations in the history of sports, the Steelers are making sure that they are hosting the draft in style.

Of course, Bettis is one of the franchise’s top-tier legends. Only Franco Harris had more rushing yards and rushing touchdowns in his Steelers career. Having earned three All-Pro selections and making four Pro Bowls with the Steelers after being traded from the Los Angeles Rams, he built a reputation as one of the best bruising running backs of the 1990s and 2000s. After ending his storied career with a Super Bowl title, he was enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2015.

The Steelers Need an Offensive Rebirth

Mike McCarthy

Perhaps it is fitting that Bettis is going to be announcing a late-round pick for the Steelers. One of the best offensive players in the team’s history, he could potentially be announcing a key offensive selection. Of course, offense is going to be preached with Mike McCarthy coming to town as the new head coach.

Having been an NFL head coach for 18 years and coaching notable quarterbacks such as Joe Montana, Brett Favre, Aaron Rodgers, Dak Prescott, and Alex Smith, McCarthy has built a reputation as one of the league’s best offensive play-callers. Particularly with the Green Bay Packers, McCarthy’s offenses were some of the most prolific in the league. He will be looking to change the fortunes of the Steelers’ offense in a big way in his first season.

Of course, part of that hinges on whether or not future Hall of Fame quarterback Aaron Rodgers will decide to come back for his 22nd career season. After guiding the team to its first division title in five years despite being 42 and battling a fractured wrist, Rodgers showed off what has made him one of the league’s greatest players in history. His talent and ability to connect with his teammates more than played a role in the team’s success a season ago. Now, time can only tell if he will return for one more run with the coach he started his storied career with.
