Steelers Fielding Calls on a ‘Number of Players’ Before NFL Draft: Report

The NFL Draft is set to kick off in Pittsburgh on Thursday, which may be fitting considering how intriguing a team the Pittsburgh Steelers are. While they continue to field questions about what they are going to do at quarterback, they are also fielding potential trading calls from other teams.

According to insider Mark Kaboly, the Steelers are receiving calls on multiple players ahead of the NFL Draft. While no deals have been agreed to, it is clear that the Steelers have some players who are coveted by other teams. Some of those players could be from the outside linebacker position.

Could the Pittsburgh Steelers Be Sellers?

Here is what Kaboly wrote on Monday via social media about which Steelers players other teams are asking about:

“The Steelers have gotten calls about a number of their players leading up to the draft, but they are also saying, ‘Thanks, but no thanks.’ With an embarrassment of riches at the outside linebacker position with T.J. Watt, Alex Highsmith, Nick Herbig, and Jack Sawyer, that’s an obvious place that outside teams are checking in on.”

Kaboly also mentioned that the odds of the team entertaining a trade at edge-rusher are so minuscule that it might not even be worth mentioning.

The only remotely close reason why Pittsburgh might consider trading away an edge-rusher such as Alex Highsmith or Nick Herbig is so that a spot could be freed up for the player that isn’t traded. Herbig is entering the final year of his rookie deal, and after a career year as a backup, the Steelers might want to see what they have in him as a starter. Or, after Highsmith recorded 9.5 sacks last season, perhaps the team could trade away Herbig to give him more playing time.

Could the Steelers Trade Up?

Omar Khan

The Steelers are fascinating because they were a playoff team a season ago that happens to have 12 draft picks at their disposal. New head coach Mike McCarthy is taking over a team that has loads of experience on both sides of the ball, and it now has a great chance to add plenty of youthful talent. Now, to get some of the best talent on the board, could the Steelers couple some of their late-round draft picks to move up in either the first round or on day two?

Could they have an interest in trading up to draft a potential slot wide receiver to join forces with DK Metcalf and Michael Pittman Jr.? Could they trade up to draft a replacement for Pro Bowl guard Isaac Seumalo? Anything and everything should be on the table for this team, seeing as it is looking to win right now. All eyes will be on GM Omar Khan when the Steelers come close to hopping on the clock at pick No. 21 overall in the first round.
