Spurs Announce Key Decision Vs Mavericks After Victor Wembanyama News

The San Antonio Spurs are playing the Dallas Mavericks on Friday, April 10, in what is the second-to-last game of the season for both teams.

Before the game, it was announced that NBA superstar Victor Wembanyama will be playing in the game for the Spurs.

Wembanyama had been questionable for much of the day after missing the team’s last game against the Portland Trail Blazers following a rib injury he suffered against the Philadelphia 76ers earlier in the week.

Following the Wembanyama news, San Antonio announced its starting lineup and final injury report against the Mavericks.

In a post on social media, the Spurs confirmed the starting lineup for the Friday game against Dallas.

De’Aaron Fox, Dylan Harper, Devin Vassell, Julian Champagnie, and Wembanyama all got the nod as starters by head coach Mitch Johnson.

While Wembanyama was a late upgrade to available for the game, San Antonio is still missing a key piece, meaning players like Fox and Harper will see increased roles.

But as the Spurs have been near the top the Western Conference standings for much of the year, the game against Dallas might not come as a worrisome matchup, considering they are headed for another year in of the NBA Draft lottery.

GettySACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA – MARCH 17: Victor Wembanyama #1 of the San Antonio Spurs warms up before their game against the Sacramento Kings at Golden 1 Center on March 17, 2026 in Sacramento, California.

While Wembanyama was questionable, and then a game-time decision before being upgraded to available, he wasn’t the only key player on the injury report for the Spurs.

Stephon Castle was also questionable, but he was later ruled out for the game against the Mavericks. The second-year guard is having an All-Defensive and potentially All-NBA quality season, but he has been dealing with right knee soreness for the past few days.

“Eighty games and the way he plays. It’s real. We’re not just sitting him just to sit him,” Johnson said, per Tom Orsborn of the San Antonio Express.

But while Castle has already played 67 games and qualified for potential awards, the same is not true for his star teammate. Wembanyama needs to play one more game to hit 65 games on the year and qualify for end-of-season awards, which he is expected to do in the Friday game.

Along with those two, the Spurs only have a few two-way players listed on the injury report for the team’s game against Dallas.

Spurs Playoff Scenarios

San Antonio has clinched the second seed in the West and is now headed to the playoffs for the first time in seven seasons.

But while they have already locked in their spot in the postseason, it remains to be seen who the Spurs will play in the first round. Their opponent won’t be officially decided until the Play-In Tournament wraps up, but at this point, they could be matching up against either the Los Angeles Clippers, Phoenix Suns, Trail Blazers, or Golden State Warriors.

It’s been a strong season for the Spurs, but it’s the first time Wembanyama and this group will see postseason action. While that’s usually not a good sign for teams, as it relates to a potentially deep run, San Antonio only sits behind the Oklahoma City Thunder in terms of odds to win the NBA championship and the Larry O’Brien trophy this season.

Regardless, they’ll need a healthy Wembanyama for that fate to come true, and right now, keeping the superstar off the injury report remains the most important thing for the Spurs at this point in the season.
