Seattle Mariners Look to Extend Two Key Players

The Seattle Mariners have approached Bryan Woo and Logan Gilbert for contract extensions. While Gilbert and Woo are the only two publicly known players in negotiations with the club, the Mariners plan on trying to keep most of the players they’ve developed in their farm system.

President of baseball operations Jerry Dipoto said, “This is part of our roster-building plan. We draft them, we develop them, we want to keep them with the Mariners. And that goes for everyone down there. If there is mutual interest, and we can find something that works for both sides, we are happy to continue to engage our players and use this as part of our long-term roster-building plan.”

Gilbert and Woo have proven to be vital pieces of the Mariners core over the last few years.

Gilbert has been incredibly consistent over his five full seasons in the majors. He has a career 3.61 ERA over 149 starts with the organization. He is 28 years old and will enter his final year of arbitration in 2027.

Woo also has been a godsend since appearing in the majors in 2023. He has a 3.15 ERA in 72 starts. He is 26 years old and is not arbitration eligible until 2027.

Mariners Continue to Extend Players in the Organization

GettyThe Seattle Mariners front office has made a point of keeping their own players over the last few seasons.

Since 2021, the Mariners have made many key extensions to players they have both acquired and developed. After acquiring Luis Castillo, J.P. Crawford, Andrés Muñoz, and Victor Robles, the Mariners have made a point to keep those players.

Castillo signed a five year $108 million contract with a vesting option for a sixth year after the Mariners traded for him from the Cincinnati Reds. Crawford signed a five year $51 million contract in 2021. Muñoz signed a four year $7.5 million contract with three team options. Robles signed a two year $9.75 million contract with a third year club option after his breakout season with the team in 2024.

The Mariners have been even more aggressive keeping players they’ve developed on long term contracts. Colt Emerson, Cal Raleigh, and Julio Rodríguez have all signed huge deals, showing their commitment to the club. Rodríguez signed a historic contract with Seattle during his breakout rookie season. Before the 2025 season, Cal Raleigh signed a six year $105 million contract with a seventh year vesting option. They’ve continued this trend this season when they signed Emerson to a eight year $95 million contract with a ninth year club option. Emerson has yet to even debut in the MLB.

Seattle Mariners Pitching Continues to Dominate

So far in 2026, Mariners pitching continues to dominate. Per Fangraphs, Mariners starting pitching has the most wins above replacement so far this season. By keeping their starting pitchers, the Mariners realize that their rotation is the key to their success long term.

Woo so far has a 1.38 ERA in two starts. Gilbert has a 5.4 ERA in three starts, but his peripheral metrics indicate that he’s been very unlucky so far. His Fielding Independent Pitching (FIP) is 2.31, showing that his ERA should be much lower. Castillo currently has a 2.79 ERA in two starts. George Kirby has a 3.6 ERA in three starts. Emerson Hancock has been Seattle’s best starter shockingly early this season, throwing for a 0.71 ERA in two starts.

The club expects Bryce Miller back from injury at some point this season, but with how the rotation has begun the season, they can afford to let him rest until fully healthy.
