Seahawks’ Jalen Milroe Getting Mixed Reactions at Training Camp

The Seattle Seahawks selected quarterback Jalen Milroe as a clear project. But as a Day 2 selection, the team, at the very least, wants to see the former Alabama signal-caller develop into a reliable QB2.

The Seahawks appeared to approach his rookie season as a redshirt year of sorts. He served as a QB3 behind Sam Darnold and Drew Lock.

Whether Milroe is destined for the same role during his second season depends on who one asks.

Some analysts have liked what Milroe has produced at training camp this summer. Other pundits have not.

While Lock keeps the QB2 spot, Milroe is actively challenging him for his job,” wrote SI on Seahawks’ Jeremy Brener. “Milroe has stacked some strong days in training camp, and it is better than anything he did during his entire rookie season.

“Milroe is making throws that he was unable to make a year ago, and it’s clear that he has learned a lot from his year on the bench.”

Fansided’s 12th Man Rising’s Lee Vowell provided a near opposite review of Milroe through roughly a week of training camp. On August 4, Vowell called Milroe one of two losers from the early part of camp.

“He has once again struggled with consistent accuracy, which was one of the knocks on him coming out of Alabama,” wrote Vowell. “That he hasn’t seemed to improve this past offseason is a real issue that he needs to remedy immediately.”

Milroe appeared in three games for the Seahawks last season. In all three situations, he went into a wild cat formation.

He ran for four rushing yards on three attempts. Milroe didn’t attempt a pass.

How Has Jalen Milroe Looked at Training Camp?

Jalen Milroe

GettyNFL pundits have reacted very differently to how quarterback Jalen Milroe has performed at Seattle Seahawks training camp.

It’s not necessarily uncommon to get differing opinions on how a player looks at practice. There’s much more subjectivity involved in evaluating a quarterback’s performance in practice versus a game.

In this situation, Lock could also “look better” than Milroe based on the performances of the players around him, and Milroe is more likely to be getting snaps with younger, more inexperienced players.

Furthermore, Analysts might not see every snap of each practice, leading to more subjective reviews.

Seahawks fans are likely to get a better picture of where the backup quarterback competition stands after a couple preseason contests. The Seahawks will play their first preseason game versus the Dallas Cowboys on Saturday, August 15.

Lock is a failed former starter. During his first three seasons with the Denver Broncos, he led the team to an 8-13 record, going 4-12 in his final two campaigns.

During 2023, though, Lock was 1-1 as an injury replacement for Geno Smith. He returned to the Seahawks to be Darnold’s backup last year.

Lock didn’t make a start last season. But he’s still viewed around the league as an average to above average backup.

Last season, Lock went 2-for-3 with 15 yards in five appearances.

The Seahawks only have three quarterbacks on their roster. So there really isn’t much drama at the position in Seattle this summer.

The team won’t be cutting any of its signal-callers, and Darnold is clearly the starter. Pundits trying to drum up controversial will discuss whether Milroe could replace Lock as QB2.

It appears to be a possibility if Milroe plays well this summer. With mixed reviews through the early part of camp, it’s hard to say if he’s really putting any pressure on Lock.

That could change, though, in the preseason. If Milroe is stellar and Lock struggles, the Seahawks coaching staff will at least have something to consider.
