After a second round 74 at The Masters, Scottie Scheffler lost his streak of eleven straight rounds under par at Augusta National. Scheffler came into Friday at two under par, looking to stay in contention for the weekend. However, he slipped down to even par for the tournament.
Scheffler struggled on approach and on the greens. Per Data Golf, he lost -1.98 strokes putting and -0.38 on approach. He missed par putts on 4, 5, 13, and 15. On 13 and 15, he hit his approaches in the water, leading to bogeys. Data Golf projects Scheffler has a 2.6% chance of winning as of this writing.
Scottie Scheffler Came Into Augusta With Concerns
GettyScottie Scheffler entered Augusta National with a lot of questions with his game.
Scheffler‘s form in 2026 has left a lot to be desired in comparison to what he has displayed over the last few years. The lofty expectations he has set for himself are difficult to replicate for any golfer, but they have remained regardless of what he has displayed so far this season.
Scheffler has a win, three top fives, and four top twenties so far in 2026. However, in his last two starts, he has finished t-24 at The Arnold Palmer Invitational and t-22 at The Players. This would be an impeccable year for any golfer besides Scheffler.
The main concern for Scheffler has been on approach. This season, he is gaining 0.35 strokes on approach, which is a severe decrease from where he has been over the last few years. From 2023 to 2025, Scheffler has averaged gaining 1.45 strokes on approach, which has been the highest on the PGA Tour.
The rest of the game for Scheffler has been excellent. He’s posting the best putting numbers of his career and is still displaying consistent play around the greens and off the tee. Although the putting has been a concern this week, Scheffler’s putting has been a skill he’s greatly improved upon over the last few seasons.
How Scottie Can Get Back into the Tournament
GettyScottie Scheffler will need to shoot a low round tomorrow to have a chance to obtain his third green jacket.
Overall, Scheffler has been very sharp from tee to green, especially with his driving. For the tournament, he is gaining almost two strokes per round off the tee. The approach and around the green game have not been as good but still positive overall. He’s gaining 0.42 strokes on approach and 0.66 strokes around the green. He’s lost on average -1.17 strokes per round so far on the greens.
Scottie also needs to score better on the par 5s as he’s only one under for the tournament on those holes. After an eagle on 2 in the opening round, Scottie has been one over in total on the par 5s.
Scottie may need to shoot several under par or lower on Saturday to have a chance at his third green jacket. He’s very capable of doing it obviously, but he will need to fix these issues in order to have a chance. It has been an unusual year for Scheffler based on what we are used to, but it would not shock anyone if he got back into the tournament by the time we are done with 54 holes.
