San Diego Padres Predicted to Trade for $56M Cy Young Winner

The San Diego Padres had a solid 2025 season, as they finished the campaign with a 90-72 record. However, their playoff run ended up being very short, as they fell to the Chicago Cubs in the National League Wild Card series in three games. With this, it was another disappointing postseason for the Padres.

In response to their short postseason, the Padres ended up having a pretty busy offseason. They brought in multiple new players, as they added Sung-Mun Song, Miguel Andujar, Ty Adcock, Daison Acosta, Triston McKenzie, and Nick Castellanos. However, they also lost Dylan Cease (Toronto Blue Jays), Luis Arraez (San Francisco Giants), Robert Suarez (Atlanta Braves), and Ryan O’Hearn (Pittsburgh Pirates) this offseason.

Given how this offseason went for the Padres, it is clear that they should not be done trying to boost their roster yet. Their biggest need is another star pitcher in their starting rotation, and they are now being predicted to land a former Cy Young Award winner this season because of it.

San Diego Padres Predicted to Make Big Trade for Miami Marlins Star Pitcher Sandy Alcantara

In a recent article for The Athletic, Jim Bowden made 26 bold predictions for the 2026 season. The Padres certainly landed one of the biggest predictions from Bowden’s column. This is because the MLB insider predicted that the Padres would end up acquiring Miami Marlins star pitcher Sandy Alcantara at the 2026 MLB trade deadline.

“The Marlins trade Sandy Alcantara, with a year and half remaining of team control, to the Padres at the deadline,” Bowden wrote.

With the Padres in need of another star pitcher, it would make a lot of sense if they made a push for Alcantara this season. When playing at his best, Alcantara is a very impactful pitcher, and it is exactly why he won the NL Cy Young Award during the 2022 season with the Marlins.

When looking at trade candidates around the league, there is no question that Alcantara is one of the best starting pitcher options. Because of this and the Padres looking to remain legitimate contenders, it would not be particularly surprising if they tried to swing a blockbuster trade for the 6-foot-5 righty.

Alcantara is coming off a down season with the Marlins, though. In 31 appearances this past season with the Marlins, he had an 11-12 record, a 5.36 ERA, and 142 strikeouts. This was after he did not pitch during the 2024 season. Yet, when looking at his resume, the two-time All-Star is a prime bounce-back candidate and could thrive with a fresh start in San Diego.

Marlins Should Have Plenty of Suitors for Alcantara This Season

With Alcantara being one of the top pitchers in the rumor mill, there is no question that the Marlins should receive plenty of interest regarding him this season. Besides the Padres, a few other teams that could consider pursuing the star pitcher include the Atlanta Braves, San Francisco Giants, Baltimore Orioles, and New York Yankees.

Nevertheless, it will be interesting to see if the Padres end up being the lucky team that lands Alcantara this season from here.
