The Sacramento Kings are hosting the San Antonio Spurs on Tuesday, March 17, in California.
As the Kings work on making a comeback, their starting point guard, Russell Westbrook, has moved up an NBA leaderboard.
The future Hall of Famer is now in the top five all-time for assists.

Heading into the Tuesday night matchup, Westbrook was No. 7 on the list.
Just two assists would allow the Kings guard to surpass Mark Jackson. Three more would get him past Steve Nash.

With this assist, Russell Westbrook passes Steve Nash for 5th on the all-time ASSISTS list!
Now, Westbrook is No. 5 all-time, and is chasing the Los Angeles Lakers superstar, LeBron James, who has room to improve on the list as well.
Ahead of James are Jason Kidd (12,091), Chris Paul (12,552), and John Stockton (15,806).
A Legendary Career

Westbrook is one of the best players of his generation.
The 37-year-old entered the NBA as the fourth-overall pick out of UCLA in 2008. He was drafted by the Seattle SuperSonics, who became the Oklahoma City Thunder.
Westbrook spent 11 years of his career playing for the Thunder. He became an All-Star in eight of those seasons and was a frequent MVP candidate for several seasons. In 2016-2017, Westbrook was named the NBA MVP for the first and only time in his career.
Since his OKC days, Westbrook hasn’t had a long-term home, but he has made an impact for each team. He spent one season with the Houston Rockets before spending another with the Washington Wizards.
After his single season in Washington, Westbrook joined the Los Angeles Lakers for a two-year run. He joined the Los Angeles Clippers for two seasons before signing with the Denver Nuggets last year.
After the 2024-2025 NBA season, Westbrook joined the Kings.
This season, he has 62 appearances with Sacramento. Westbrook is averaging 15.4 points, 6.6 assists, and 5.5 rebounds per game.
Throughout his career, Westbrook has posted averages of 20.9 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 8.0 assists. He led the NBA in assists per game in three different seasons.

The Kings’ guard is now just one of two players in the top five who are still active. It’s unclear if James is going to continue building on his total next season. While the consensus assumes he won’t call it a career, LeBron has left his future up in the air as of now.
As for Westbrook, he made it clear that the 2025-2026 NBA season is not his final rodeo in the NBA. Back in October, the star guard told reporters, “Yeah, right,” when asked if there was a thought of retiring in 2026.
The only question for Westbrook is where he’ll spend his next season. At the end of the 2025-2026 run, Westbrook’s contract will expire. He’ll get another opportunity to hit the open market and weigh his options.
