Richard Sherman Gets Blunt on Seahawks Ownership Speculation

On Jan. 30, ESPN’s Seth Wickersham and Brady Henderson reported, citing league and ownership sources familiar with the arrangement, that the Seattle Seahawks will go up for sale after Super Bowl LX.

A sale of the Seahawks would end all the questions regarding the team’s long-term future after the 2018 death of former owner Paul G. Allen. One player who played for Allen was Richard Sherman.

The former NFL cornerback shared his thoughts on the entire situation, as the report from Wickersham and Henderson reveals, citing sources, that sale conversations have occurred for at least the past week at the ownership and league levels.

“The league is pretty adamant about that because when teams sell, it ups the value in the valuation of the other teams,” Sherman said in a video posted on Feb. 5 from “The Richard Sherman Podcast.” “Paul Allen was a fantastic owner. I think Jody did her best and did a great job of just trying to continue his legacy and continue what he wanted. And I think he’d be very proud of the job she’s done, the job John Schneider and the staff have done, getting them back to a Super Bowl.

“If this is the end of her tenure as an owner of the Seattle Seahawks and they go off with a Super Bowl champion, I think that’s a beautiful ending to a fantastic story of the Allens and their ownership of the Seattle Seahawks. And the city and the team will know nothing but love and joy and appreciation for their time owning the team and look forward to what’s next in the future.”

Paul G. Allen Estate Comments on Latest Speculation

An NFL spokesperson declined to comment. Meanwhile, a representative for the Paul G. Allen estate said in a statement that the organization does not address rumors or speculation and emphasized that “the team is not for sale.” Furthermore, their focus is their Super Bowl LX matchup against the New England Patriots

“We’ve already said that will change at some point per Paul’s wishes, but I have no news to share, the spokesperson’s statement said (h/t ESPN). “Our focus right now is winning the Super Bowl and completing the sale of the Portland Trail Blazers in the coming months.”

Jody Allen Receives High Praise for Seahawks Tenure

Moreover, Allen’s sister, Jody Allen, has controlled the teams as the trust’s executor, with her brother’s directive to sell both and donate the proceeds to charity eventually. Recently, Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald shared what she has meant to the team since his arrival.

“The thing that sticks out to me about Jody was her enthusiasm about where she wanted our team to be and our franchise to be as a vision of the Seattle Seahawks,” Macdonald said on Jan. 30 during team media availability (h/t ESPN).

“That was during our interview process. Honestly, that’s really where I was like, ‘OK, this is something I feel really strongly about that I feel like I could help create that.’ So everything, I think, has been through that lens. It’s very clear what type of team she wants, and she’s been incredibly supportive. … She’s been awesome.”
