Opinions are split on the main event of WrestleMania 42. Cody Rhodes came into his title defense match as a clear-cut babyface.
Yet throughout the bout, Rhodes acted like a heel. He hit Randy Orton with a low blow. He attacked his back while maintaining high aggression and pressure throughout the night.
None of those things is bad. However, when your top baby face starts moving like a heel for most of the night, things can get confusing from a storyline standpoint.
Of course, everything got put right after Cody secured the dub, when Orton hit Cody with a PK kick after the match.
Despite a swell of negative sentiment from the IWC, Ric Flair was quick to praise the in-ring work of Randy and Cody. The WWE Hall of Famer and bona fide legend even dubbed the match one of WrestleMania’s greatest in recent memory.
“One Of The Greatest Matches I’ve Seen In The Last Few Years,” Flair posted to X after the match. “Congrats To @CodyRhodes But There Is No Winner Or Loser! @RandyOrton, You Were Spectacular! You Both Represent So Well At The Highest Level. I Have So Much Respect For You Both! #wrestlemania.”
Flair’s post undoubtedly helped some fans see the match in a new light. However, it didn’t stop fans from sharing their frustrations with the wrestling legend.
WWE Fans Share Frustrations Under Flair’s Post
Flair has an enormous social media following. As such, multiple fans opted to share their takes regarding both Randy vs. Cody and WrestleMania 42 as a whole in his comments section.
“Had a few cocktails huh?” @GoForItLasVegas replied. “The match absolutely sucked. The ending and aftermath were stupid.”
“Worst main event of all time,” @St_Louisra wrote. “… Pat was the voice on the phone the build-up, and then you turn on him smfhhhh fire triple h please he is bad for creative and business.”
“This ‘Mania main event was booked terribly, chaotic, inconclusive overkill. Randy holding the belt he lost killed closure,” @Stuart_W_D commented. “Worst finish in decades. Nothing more than a TV filler.”
“Disagree nature boy,” @swctrader311 replied. “Once again, an over-complicated s–t show with way too much outside garbage. Clean matches don’t exist anymore. The WWE product is so bad that they forced Pat and (Jelly) Roll on us, and this match needed neither. Let quality workers carry their own match.”
WWE Must Impress With WrestleMania Night 2
Right now, a large portion of the WWE fanbase is frustrated with the product on offer. Saturday night did very little to calm those frustrations. Therefore, night two of WrestleMania needs to be knocked out of the part.
If the WWE runs more of the same: short matches, commercial after commercial, and poor storyline development, they could receive a sizeable backlash from outspoken fans.
After all, ticket prices have gone through the roof, and the overall product has been on a steady decline. WrestleMania is supposed to be the biggest night in all of professional wrestling. Hopefully, the WWE will make us remember that on Sunday.
