Red Wings Rumors: Insider Hints at Detroit’s Wishlist

The Detroit Red Wings rumors cycle continues to turn. After the club has missed out on several key targets this season, the Wings look to continue improving their club. With Detroit looking to get back to the playoffs for the first time in about a decade, the team’s wishlist features a couple of key pieces.

Insider Darren Dreger recently revealed said wishlist. During an appearance on TSN’s Insider Trading. Dreger honed in on what GM Steve Yzerman is looking to acquire. Topping the wishlist is another top-six forward and a blueliner:

“They are looking for a number two centre, a player with term, and preferably a right-shot defenceman, again, with term. When you look at what Detroit might be willing to part with, you have a look at their draft list. They’ve got a number of juicy picks that could be in play.”

Indeed, the club has the pieces to make something work. However, Red Wings rumors suggest that Yzerman is unwilling to part with his best young assets. Of course, that approach makes sense. The Wings are emerging from a rebuild. That’s why it makes no sense to jettison up-and-coming players at this point.

Still, the Red Wings rumor mill will continue to grind until the clock winds down on the NHL trade deadline.

Red Wings Rumors Hint at Various Names

The Red Wings rumors list includes some of the most talked-about names this season. Players like Nazem Kadri and Blake Coleman of the Calgary Flames have made the rounds. Artemi Panarin was briefly part of the chatter, but nothing seems to be going on there.

As such, the Red Wings may just be biding their time until the sellers actively sell. That could open up some other opportunities on the forward market. Beyond that, Red Wings rumors point towards a defenseman being Detroit’s biggest target.

After missing out on Rasmus Andersson, the chatter has turned towards Justin Faulk of the St. Louis Blues. However, landing Faulk may be easier said than done. The reported price tag on Faulk is high. That’s something that Yzerman isn’t too keen on this trade deadline season.

Could Detroit Just Stand Pat?

With the way things are trending, it could be that the Red Wings might just stand pat. One of the prevailing Red Wings rumors is that Yzerman does not want to overpay for a veteran at this point in the rebuild.

Detroit, like the Montreal Canadiens, is not quite in a position to go all-in on a veteran piece like Artemi Panarin. While such a scenario may not be too far off, now is the time. That’s why there could be a real possibility that Detroit just stands pat at this trade deadline season.

It’ll be worth keeping an eye on Red Wings rumors moving forward. The club has plenty of cap space and pieces to make a blockbuster work. However, it doesn’t seem like the time for such bold moves is now.

Ultimately, Detroit fans may end up mildly disappointed that the club didn’t make a major splash. The good news is that the Red Wings are solid enough to preclude the need for a huge trade at this point.
