Red Sox Trade Prediction Sends $90 Million Outfielder to Giants for Casey Schmitt

Could the Boston Red Sox and San Francisco Giants link up in a meaningful trade? The Red Sox have been the steady subject of several trade rumors during recent months, especially regarding their trio of impactful outfielders (Jarren Duran, Masataka Yoshida, and Wilyer Abreu).

The most logical decision for the Red Sox should be to trade Yoshida, who isn’t really in the fold for Boston right now. The issue is finding a trade partner that sees enough value to complete Yoshida’s five-year, $90 million deal he signed before 2023.

Red Sox Urged to Trade Away Masataka Yoshida

In the recent mock trade idea by SI.com’s Thomas Carelli, the Red Sox are predicted to make a trade with the San Francisco Giants, which would offload Masataka Yoshida in favor for Giants’ first baseman Casey Schmitt:

“The Red Sox have a surplus in the outfield. That is quite obvious, where a .280 batter like Yoshida is forced to sit on the bench. In this deal, the Red Sox can make a low-risk trade by gaining a utility corner infielder to back up average assets in Caleb Durbin and Willson Contreras. To pay Yoshida $18 million AAV to sit on the bench is not smart, so they will flip him at that low risk we speak of.”

Unfortunately for the Red Sox, as Carelli notes, Boston is in a tough contract spot with Yoshida, given that they are paying him to not play.

Casey Shmitt’s Potential Value with Red Sox

Casey Schmitt has spent his four-year MLB career with the Giants, but 2026 seems to be the year he is finally an everyday player.

In 2025, he hit 12 home runs and 15 doubles in 312 total at-bats. For his career, Schmitt has 23 home runs and 88 RBI in 232 games.

It would be a good depth piece for the Red Sox infield, as Schmitt originally came up as a middle infielder/third baseman.

While the Red Sox aren’t off to the greatest start in 2026, there is still plenty of time for the front office to make the tough decisions like what to do with Masataka Yoshida, but it’s not far-fetched to think the $90 million outfielder’s day in Boston might be numbered.
