Red Sox’ Roman Anthony Gets Brutally Honest Amid Horror Start

The Boston Red Sox dropped to 2-8 on the season Monday night, losing 8-6 to the Milwaukee Brewers. It was another difficult night for a team still searching for answers early in the season.

Roman Anthony had a chance to throw out the go-ahead runner at home plate on a line-drive single to left field. The throw did not get there, trailing up the third base line and rolling past catcher Carlos Narváez, allowing a second run to score.

After the game, Anthony addressed it directly.

Anthony Gets Brutally Honest

A former Boston Red Sox star expressed his serious concerns about the team's awful start this season, pointing out a crucial factor.

The 21-year-old stood in front of reporters and did not shy away from what happened.

“It was a terrible throw, again,” Anthony said, per Ian Browne of MLB.com. “We didn’t have a shot with that throw. Gotta be better. It was terrible.”

He was pushed further on what he felt was causing the issue. Anthony offered some insight while making sure it did not come across as an excuse.

“Just struggling to get a grip on the ball, but at the end, there’s no excuse,” Anthony said. “It’s on me. It’s just a mix of everything. At the end of the day, it’s gotta be at least competitive, and it wasn’t. Again.”

A Problem That Keeps Growing

Monday’s throw was not an isolated incident. Anthony has now generated headlines with his arm multiple times this season, and Monday night was arguably his worst yet.

Manager Alex Cora addressed the situation before Saturday’s game against the San Diego Padres, suggesting Anthony was working through some footwork issues. Whether it is grip, footwork, or simply a matter of repetition, the Red Sox are confident it is something that can be corrected.

Anthony has shown plenty with the bat this season and remains one of the most exciting young players in the game. The throwing is an area he and the coaching staff are actively working to clean up.

What It Means for the Red Sox

The Boston Red Sox sit at 2-8, among the toughest starts in the American League. The early schedule has been difficult, and the team is still finding its footing across the roster. Runs have been hard to come by, and the bullpen has had its struggles too. It has been a challenging opening stretch all around.

Cora and the coaching staff will work through the throwing issues with Anthony. At 21 years old, there is every reason to believe he can correct it. The season is still early and there is plenty of time to turn the page on this stretch.

Final Word for the Red Sox

Anthony’s honesty after Monday’s game was the right response. Owning the mistake publicly, without excuses, is what leaders do.

The Red Sox need him to translate that accountability into cleaner throws. The season is young and there is still plenty of time to turn things around.

Tuesday brings another chance against the Brewers.
