It might be a little early to start thinking about trades that may transpire across MLB, but it’s always fun to speculate who could be on the move later this summer, and which teams might make moves.
In a recent predictions piece, ‘Way-too-early MLB trade deadline preview’, by FanSided’s Austin Owens, the MLB writer predicts that the Boston Red Sox will make a splash move for Washington Nationals’ All-Star infielder CJ Abrams.
CJ Abrams picked up some trade speculation all offseason, as the Nationals made some ‘selling’ moves, but ultimately he ended up staying put to start the season, and surprisingly, the Nationals are off to a solid start to the 2026 season.

Red Sox Predicted to Land CJ Abrams in Mid-Season Deal
The idea behind the piece by Owens is that a handful of MLB stars will not make it past the MLB trade deadline, and it’s fair to think CJ Abrams could be one of those players:
“Over the last three seasons, Washington Nationals shortstop CJ Abrams has quietly become one of the most consistent players across the league. hitting at least .245 with nearly 20 homers and 60+ RBI in each of his last three campaigns. His defense at short leaves something to be desired, but at the age of 25, he is unfairly viewed more as a veteran now than a rising talent. There’s still room to grow here, and the athleticism isn’t in question.”
The Red Sox are off to a bit of a slow start this season, which might highlight their need for an infielder. It doesn’t seem likely that Boston will part with Wilyer Abreu or Jarren Duran, but if things continue to trend southward, Craig Breslow may be forced to make a blockbuster trade.

Will the Nationals Make CJ Abrams Available?
Only time will be able to tell if the Nats will make CJ Abrams available.
Although not totally uncommon, blockbuster trades are usually saved for the month of July.
CJ Abrams was an All-Star in 2024, and has 59 home runs in five MLB seasons. He’s also just 25-years-old and isn’t eligible for free agency until 2029.
This would be an ideal trade for the Red Sox to pull off, but the next question is, how much would it cost?
Boston traded away a handful of prospects this offseason in big trades and might not want to sell the farm just to crowd its infield group further.
