Red Sox Land Former Yankees Reliever Ahead of Opening Day

The Boston Red Sox are entering the 2026 season with the goal of building off their strong 2025 campaign. The Red Sox notably made the playoffs for the first time since 2021 last season, and they will be aiming to take another step in the right direction during the 2026 campaign from here.

The Red Sox made multiple additions to their roster during the offseason. They notably signed star pitcher Ranger Suarez in free agency to a five-year, $130 million contract. They also brought in players like Willson Contreras, Sonny Gray, Johan Oviedo, Caleb Durbin, Danny Coulombe, and Isiah Kiner-Falefa.

While the Red Sox made some solid additions during the offseason, they also notably lost star infielder Alex Bregman to the Chicago Cubs. Although losing a high-impact player like Bregman is undoubtedly rough for the Red Sox, there is still reason to be optimistic about them heading into the 2026 season.

The Red Sox will play their Opening Day game against the Cincinnati Reds on March 26. Yet, with Opening Day almost here, the Red Sox have brought in a former New York Yankees reliever in a late Spring Training move.

Red Sox Sign Former Yankees Reliever Tommy Kahnle to Minor-League Contract

With the regular season here, the Red Sox have now made an interesting move to boost their pitching depth. According to the New York Post’s Jon Heyman, the Red Sox have signed former Yankees pitcher Tommy Kahnle to a minor-league contract.

Boston 7’s Ari Alexander later reported that Kahnle would get $1.5 million from the Red Sox if he makes their major league roster. In addition, Alexander shared that Kahnle’s deal comes with up to $250,000 in performance bonuses.

With the Red Sox needing more pitching depth, it is understandable that they are taking a chance on Kahnle with this low-risk move. If he impresses on his minor-league deal and ends up making Boston’s major league roster, he would provide them with another solid veteran for their bullpen.

Kahnle spent this past season with the Detroit Tigers, and it was a shaky year for the 36-year-old. In 66 appearances on the campaign, the 11-year veteran had a 1-5 record, a 4.43 ERA, and 50 strikeouts. Given how this past season went for Kahnle, he will now be looking for the chance to have a bounce-back year. Yet, he will first need to make the Red Sox’s roster to get that opportunity.

Kahnle’s Past Success Makes Him a Prime Bounce-Back Candidate

When looking at Kahnle’s career, the possibility of him turning things back around should not be ruled out. Just back in 2024 with the Yankees, he had a 2.11 ERA in 50 games. This was after he had a 2.66 ERA with the Yankees in 2023 and a 2.84 ERA with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2022. Furthermore, he has been a steady reliever for most of his career, as evidenced by his 3.61 ERA in 456 career games.

Kahnle is also a pitcher who has shown that he can handle playing in a big market. In 221 games over two stints and six seasons with the Yankees, he had a 7-8 record, a 3.31 ERA, and 251 strikeouts.

Overall, there is no harm in the Red Sox adding Kahnle on this minor-league contract, and it will be intriguing to see if he can make Boston’s roster from here.
