The Boston Red Sox made a roster move Tuesday after Garrett Crochetâs disastrous outing against the Minnesota Twins left their bullpen depleted, according to a report by Nick Deeds of MLB Trade Rumors.
The Red Sox called up right-handed pitcher Jack Anderson, 26, from Triple-A Worcester. Anderson is not yet on Boston’s 40-man roster, so the Red Sox will need to open a spot before the call-up becomes official. The move comes less than 24 hours after the worst start of Crochetâs career forced Boston to scramble for innings.
If he gets into a game, it will mark Anderson’s major league debut, per the CBS Sports RotoWire staff. The promotion was first reported by Ari Alexander of WHDH-TV in Boston.

Who Is Jack Anderson? A Look at the Red Sox Prospect
Anderson comes to the Red Sox with little fanfare. A 16th-round pick by the Detroit Tigers in the 2021 draft out of Florida State, Boston selected him from Detroit in the minor league phase of the 2024 Rule 5 Draft, according to Brendan Campbell of Blogging the Red Sox. The 6-foot-3, 197-pound right-hander spent most of last season at Double-A Portland, posting a 3.58 ERA across 75 1/3 innings as a multi-inning reliever with 90 strikeouts against 18 walks. Anderson is not currently ranked among Boston’s top pitching prospects by SoxProspects.com.
Still, Anderson has built momentum. In March, he represented Team Great Britain in the World Baseball Classic, holding a stacked Mexico lineup featuring Jarren Duran, Randy Arozarena, Jonathan Aranda and Alejandro Kirk to one run over three innings with three strikeouts and no walks. Since returning to Worcester for 2026, he has a 3.72 ERA over 9 2/3 innings with a 22.5% strikeout rate.
His arsenal includes a low-90s four-seamer, slider, splitter, cutter and curveball, Blogging the Red Sox reports. With pitch counts topping out around 76-77, he profiles best as a multi-inning reliever. That’s exactly what Boston needs right now after Crochet lasted just 55 pitches on Monday.
How Crochet’s Meltdown Created an Opening
Crochet’s Monday start at Target Field was the kind of outing that rattles a pitching staff for days. His final line: 1 2/3 innings, nine hits, 11 runs (10 earned), three walks and zero strikeouts, according to Ian Browne of MLB.com. After a four-run first inning on 31 pitches, the second only worsened the outing. Crochet allowed the first six Twins hitters to reach and gave up a three-run homer to Victor Caratini. Ryan Kreidler capped the inning with a solo shot. Boston trailed 11-0 before the frame ended.
“Command as a whole has been spotty,” Crochet said afterward, per Browne’s account. “Tonight, they made me pay.”
With Crochet lasting only five outs, relievers Jovani Moran, Tyler Samaniego and Ryan Watson each covered more than two innings, draining the bullpen’s long-relief depth heading into two more games in the series.
That depth shortage is precisely why Anderson has reportedly been promoted. Samaniego was optioned to Triple-A to make way for Anderson, according to Chris Cotillo of MassLive, despite having thrown 3 2/3 hitless innings in his brief time in the majors this season. Boston is 6-10 this season after a 2-8 start, and a thin bullpen on a road trip is not what manager Alex Cora was hoping for.
