Red Gerard and Hailey Langland are Team USA snowboarders and longtime partners who have shared Olympic stages, major wins, and setbacks together. The couple’s careers have intertwined since their teenage years, making them one of the most recognizable duos in snowboarding. Here’s what you need to know.
1. Red Gerard Is an Olympic Gold Medalist at Just 17
Red Gerard made Olympic history at the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics when he won gold in men’s slopestyle at just 17 years old, becoming the youngest snowboarder to ever win an Olympic event. The moment came unexpectedly, after Gerard famously overslept on competition morning and borrowed a teammate’s jacket before his final run.
“The media part was hard,” Gerard later said. “I was like, the only reason I’m here is because I snowboard, and I haven’t snowboarded in a month and a half.”
Now 25, Gerard remains a top contender. He placed fifth in big air and fourth in slopestyle at the 2022 Beijing Olympics and finished second overall in the slopestyle World Cup standings last season. He also won slopestyle titles at the 2024 and 2025 X Games.
2. Hailey Langland Misses the 2026 Olympics After Two ACL Tears
Hailey Langland, also 25, has competed in every Olympics since she was 17 — until now. The snowboarder tore her right ACL and spent much of the past year rehabbing, only to tear her left ACL on her first day back to training in November. The injuries forced her to step away from Olympic competition ahead of the 2026 Milan Cortina Games.
“That was one of the hardest decisions I’ve ever had to make,” Langland told Elite Daily ahead of the games. “I had to remove myself from the Olympic running, which was obviously super hard.”
She finished sixth in slopestyle and 14th in big air at the 2018 Games and placed 11th in Beijing in 2022.
3. How to Watch Red Gerard Compete at the 2026 Winter Olympics
Gerard is set to compete at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Livigno, Italy, with events airing on NBC and USA Network and streaming on Peacock. Snowboarding competition runs from Feb. 5 through Feb. 18.
He is scheduled to compete in men’s big air on Feb. 5 and Feb. 7, pending qualification, and men’s slopestyle on Feb. 16 and Feb. 18.
Despite some inconsistency, Gerard remains one of Team USA’s strongest medal hopes.
4. They’ve Been Together Since Before Their First Olympics
Langland and Gerard first met at age 12 while training at Mount Hood in Oregon. Born just weeks apart on opposite sides of the country, they became close friends long before romance entered the picture.
“When we were 17, it just sort of happened,” Langland recalled, via Olympics.com. “It was January, right before the Olympics.”
Gerard has spoken openly about how important that partnership has been.
“To snowboard with your girlfriend, your best friend — both of us push each other in really good ways,” he said. “She’s a lot more mellow. I have a lot more anxiety.”
5. Gerard and Langland Are Seen as a Snowboarding Power Couple
Two-time Olympic champion Jamie Anderson once described the pair as “a little power couple,” pointing to how common it has become for elite snowboarders to support each other on tour.
Langland agreed, noting the value of shared experience.
“We’re so lucky to be able to talk to someone who really understands,” she told ESPN. “They’re not in the exact same position we are in.”
Even with Langland sidelined for 2026, Gerard says her presence remains central.
“I’m with her 320 days a year,” he said. “And I am so lucky for it.”
