Raiders’ Davis Webb Pursuit Takes Unexpected Turn With Latest Broncos News

Things are heating up fast for the Las Vegas Raiders in their head coach pursuit. With just the Arizona Cardinals and the Cleveland Browns left (besides Las Vegas) without a head coach, there aren’t many options left for the Raiders.

The Tennessee Titans hired Brian Daboll as the team’s offensive coordinator, the Buffalo Bills announced that Joe Brady will become the next head coach, and now, some concerning news from the Denver Broncos: they have fired offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi.

Why is that bad news for the Raiders? It’s about quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator, Davis Webb.

Raiders’ Pursuit for Davis Webb Takes an Unexpected Turn

The timing of this move by the Broncos isn’t random. According to NFL insider Ian Rapoport, this has a direct impact on the Raiders’ pursuit to potentially hire Webb as the next head coach.

“Based on NFL rules, they [Denver Broncos] can’t just say, ‘Ok, Davis Webb, it is your job. What they can do is incentivize him to stay and potentially end up giving him the job. The fact that he is in the building right now for a rival interviewing for a head coaching opportunity and a strong candidate, these things are all related. Now, we’ll see where it shakes out for the Las Vegas Raiders and for the Broncos, but things do not happen in a vacuum. Certainly, they are all related.”

It also seems like head coach Sean Payton would not be happy if Webb were to leave for Las Vegas. When asked about it, he straight up said, “It would be a pain in the ass for him.”

Now, according to CBS reporter Tracy Wolfson, Webb has enjoyed talking with the Raiders. “Webb enjoyed his first interview with the Raiders and said talking with Tom [Brady] was awesome.”

It seems like Webb would be happy to become the next Raiders head coach, but the Broncos also look like they want to keep him in the building.

Who’s Left for the Raiders?

The Raiders have taken their time interviewing candidates, and now the question becomes, ‘Who’s left?’

There’s Klint Kubiak, who, according to SNY’s Connor Hughes, is the frontrunner for the Raiders’ HC job. However, NFL insider Tony Pauline also reported that the Seattle Seahawks are planning to put on a “full-court press” to keep Kubiak on the staff.

“Could Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak pull a Ben Johnson and rebuff head coaching offers to stay with his current team? It’s not out of the question, sources here in Frisco say,” Pauline wrote.

So if not Webb, if not Kubiak, then who?

Out of the candidates that the Raiders have interviewed, there’s Mike LaFleur, Nate Scheelhaase, Chris Shula, Ejiro Evero, and Matt Nagy.

Best believe Las Vegas is doing everything they can to bring either Webb or Kubiak into the building as the next head coach of the Raiders.
