Monte Vista 2, Dougherty Valley 0

After a scoreless opening half in the first East Bay Athletic League championship game for boys soccer, Monte Vista found the back of the net Saturday against Dougherty Valley in a contest played at Amador Valley.

Cole Azevedo dribbled from midfield down the line, passing a couple of defenders along the way. When the senior nearly reached the end line, he took a shot from “an impossible angle” that somehow went in, coach Beau Fisher said.

Trailing 1-0, Dougherty Valley did all it could to even the score, but it wasn’t to be.

In the final 10 minutes, Monte Vista countered, playing the ball wide to Henry Hedden, who then passed the ball across the box. There, James Downes finished with what Fisher called “a clinical header” to make it 2-0.

Monte Vista, which won the North Coast Section Division I title last season, celebrated the EBAL playoff championship as it improved to 14-2-3.

Dougherty Valley fell to 14-4-4.

Both teams are headed to the NCS playoffs.

Amador Valley 3, Carondelet 0

Amador Valley, which captured the EBAL’s regular-season title, made it a double on Saturday with a victory at home over Carondelet in the league’s playoff championship game.

Hayden Moe, Kaia Hoyman and Maylen Montoya scored the Dons’ goals. Hailey Morec and Montoya each had an assist as Amador Valley improved to 10-1-1.

Carondelet is 14-4-4.

“It was a great result, and for us, being EBAL regular season champions, being EBAL playoff champions is definitely something that we are excited about,” Amador Valley coach Grant Matsumoto wrote in an email. “The girls from both sides were fantastic, and it was a great game to be apart of. We are enjoying the confidence we are gaining as we go into NCS and are excited to see where this momentum takes us going forward.

The only thing on Dulci Vail’s mind coming into Saturday’s Diablo Athletic League championship game was a win.

“It didn’t matter if it was the league championship or state championship, I came in ready to play,” she said.

Her mindset to win showed early as she scored 25 of her 36 points in the first half en route to a big win over Miramonte to capture the DAL tournament championship.

Ariana Hallstrom added 16 points and Karyss Lacanlale chipped in 10.

The Matadors kept it close with Acalanes to start, trailing by only four after the first quarter. But a 19-3 run in the second quarter blew the game open for the Dons.

Acalanes outscored Miramonte 39-22 in the second half as it cruised to a league title.

Karena Eberts led Miramonte with 14 points in the loss.

“Our whole mindset going forward is to play every game like it’s a championship game,” Vail said.

Salesian added yet another Tri-County Athletic League Rock Division championship to its collection by jumping out to an 11-point advantage over one quarter and then keeping St. Patrick-St. Vincent at bay for the rest of the game.
