Nashville Predators news has hit the NHL airwaves with a bang on Monday. The club’s announcement marked the end of an era in Music City.
The team formally announced that current GM Barry Trotz will be stepping down from his current role. The 63-year-old will be retiring at the end of this season. The team also announced that Trotz will remain in his current post while the club searches for his replacement.
Trotz took over from David Poile in 2023, ushering in a new era in Nashville. Predators news exploded during the 2024 offseason, when Trotz signed then-free agents Steven Stamkos and Jonathan Marchessault. He also extended goalie Juuse Saros, a move that promised to bring consistent success in Nashville.
How, Predators news hasn’t been overly positive since then. Last season, the club failed to make the postseason. The huge free-agent signings didn’t really pay off. This year, the club continued to struggle amid a tough offensive season. While the Preds have gotten back into the playoff hunt, they really aren’t too close. Nashville sits four points out of the second wild card spot.
The Predators do retain some hope of making the postseason. But the playoff picture is beginning to narrow in the Western Conference, potentially leaving the Predators without much runway.
Fans should stay tuned to Predators news as the club looks to hire Trotz’s replacement. Team owner Bill Halsam stated that the goal is to have a new GM on board ahead of the 2026 NHL Draft.
Trotz Could Not Replicate Success as Coach in GM Chair
Barry Trotz is one of the NHL’s most successful coaches. He accrued at 557-479-60-100 mark as a coach in 1,196 games in Nashville alone. He coached a total of 1,812 NHL Games with three organizations. He won the 2018 Stanley Cup with the Washington Capitals and led the New York Islanders to back-to-back Eastern Conference Final appearances.
Trotz is also a two-time Jack Adams winner, claiming the award in 2016 and 2019. However, Predators news did not reflect those tremendous achievements. Trotz had wanted an opportunity to become a general manager, getting his shot in Nashville.
While his first season was successful, his last two have been duds. The jury is still out on the current campaign, but the largely underachieving results have not sat well with fans and the media.
Trotz Could Still Blow Up Predators News
There is still a chance that Barry Trotz blows up Predators News this season. The team is in limbo, potentially selling and buying at the NHL trade deadline. The club’s seeming resurgence has fueled speculation that it could add at the deadline.
But then again, rumors suggesting that Ryan O’Reilly could be on the move have dominated Predators news. The club could parlay the increasing interest in O’Reilly into various pieces to help the club make a push for a playoff spot.
It remains unclear whether the Predators will just sell off everything they can and start over next season. The club has a solid core to build around. That’s why it might be a practical matter for Trotz to step down at this particular point.
