Recent WWE World Champion Sami Zayn is apparently dealing with a real injury that could see him missing some time. Fans have wondered if Zayn’s recent hand injury was a real life one or something WWE created for kayfabe to add to his heel character. Zayn only held the title for one week before dropping it to CM Punk. WWE has sparingly used Zayn since then to further validate the injury reports.
Longtime wrestling insider Mike Johnson of PW Insider reported the following news today about Zayn’s injury:
“For those who have asked about Sami Zayn not competing in the ring of late, Zayn mentioned he had a broken hand during a segment with CM Punk last week. That is a legitimate injury, not something that is storyline.”
The broken hand took place at some point over the past few weeks to complicate Zayn’s status. WWE has a training staff of medical professionals designed to study the talents’ injuries and clear them when the time is right. Zayn could be blocked from wrestling matches until the doctors feel his hand is in good enough shape to compete in the ring. WWE may have to put some storylines and ideas on hold until Zayn is fully back.
One Major Program May Need Changes
Kevin Owens vs Punk is arguably the hottest WWE feud playing into their real-life issues with each other. Past arguments from old promotions and various real life falling outs have been referenced in promos to make fans feel more invested in two top stars truly hating each other.
Many have speculated about Zayn potentially betraying Owens as wrestlers linked together for their tag team success and for intense matches against each other. CM Punk or Owens getting pinned cleanly seems unlikely given the latter just returned and the former is only about a month into his title reign.
Zayn’s interference would make logical sense since he doesn’t want his longtime friend to win the title that he lost. However, WWE may have to tinker this if Zayn can’t wrestle any time soon. The angle in question would just hurt Owens’ momentum to carry the story without Zayn present.

Many fans were shocked that Zayn both won the world title at all and that he lost it in embarrassing fashion to CM Punk. However, the short title reign was likely done to ensure that Zayn won a WWE world title at least once.
WWE has seen Zayn become one of the cornerstones of the company in terms of production and consistency. Top names like Roman Reigns, Brock Lesnar, and Punk have enjoyed implementing a part-time schedule at times to miss many noteworthy events.
Zayn and others who always show up have been the backbone of WWE’s ascension during the 2020s. Triple H can usually slot in Zayn or other respected mid-carders into various programs from secondary comedy work to main event pushes. Zayn missing time removes one of the most versatile names associated with great matches and moments for WWE.
