Pistons Predicted To Trade For Major Star This Offseason

The Detroit Pistons will have strong interest in acquiring Michael Porter from the Brooklyn Nets this summer, according to multiple reports. Rumors leaked all season that Detroit was the team most interested in adding Porter to the roster this season after the Golden State Warriors lost interest. The Pistons ultimately opted to make a smaller move for Kevin Huerter and keep most of their roster to finish out the season.

Sports Illustrated forecasted that Porter may still be on Detroit’s radar this summer:

“In exchange for Porter, the Nets could land Ron Holland II, Isaiah Stewart, Caris LeVert, and a 2026 first-round pick (projected No. 21 overall). With the Nets not owning their own first round pick next season, there’s little incentive for them to tank, which is why the franchise could opt to keep Porter in the mix.

However, the Nets could look at Holland as a young prospect who is in dire need of a change in scenery and give him all of the opportunities to grow his game on both sides of the floor. Holland would fit very well into Fernández’s defensive identity.”

The trade would see Ron Holland as the biggest trade piece as a talented young prospect heading to Brooklyn. Caris LeVert and/or Isaiah Stewart would be needed to match the salary with a bigger name like Porter.

Detroit’s Postseason Will Decide Next Move

Detroit made a bold choice to stand pat at the trade deadline and not take any major risks for the postseason run. Veterans Tobias Harris and Duncan Robinson having starting roles stand out as a flaw that could come back to haunt them over the next series or two.

The Orlando Magic shocked the Pistons with a Game 1 upset on the road as the eighth seed to make things intense right away. A first-round elimination to Orlando would be a nightmare scenario that ruins the entire season’s accolades.

Even a second-round elimination to the Cleveland Cavaliers would be disappointing for a team to finish with 60 games as the first seed. Detroit will likely look for a deal to acquire Porter or someone with a similar skill set to improve the roster for true contention next season.

Why Michael Porter Is The Perfect Target

Brooklyn witnessed Porter having a breakout season in a new role getting more shots than his previous role on the Denver Nuggets. However, Porter has thrived in that Denver position of taking fewer shots and letting other stars set him up for open shots.

Detroit would opt to use Porter more like that, especially since Cade Cunningham has become one of the best passing guards in the league. Porter could still have some incredible scoring nights with only Cunningham and Jalen Duren as All-Stars on the roster.

Duren is not that much better than Porter to give them more of an even split to share the duties as number two behind Cade. Porter would be asked to average close to 20 points and hit big shots when the team needs him in competitive games against evenly matched teams.
