Pirates Get Big Konnor Griffin Injury Update Amid Playoff Chase

The 2026 season for the Pittsburgh Pirates has been one of ups and downs, with the team playing inconsistent baseball throughout.

Pittsburgh got off to a nice start, and the team was looking like it could finally end the long playoff drought. Adding in the emergence of its young stars, the Pirates have started to look like a force to deal with.

But over the last 10 games, the Pirates have gone 2-8, seeing themselves slip down the standings. Currently, the Pirates hold a record of 57-60 on the year, sitting in last place within the National League Central division.

While the division is likely out of the question, the race for a wild-card spot is still there. Pittsburgh is dealing with a crowded field in the NL race, but if the team can put together a few solid series over the next few weeks, it could set them up well.

The Pirates have been dealing with some injury concerns of late, leading to the struggles. One of which involves rookie sensation Konnor Griffin, who has been on the injured list for a month recovering from a torn left ring finger sagittal band.

Konnor Griffin Injury Update

The infielder has been recovering well, and the team will check in on him around mid-August to see how he’s doing. If all goes well, Griffin will then go on a rehab assignment before he can return to the Pirates.

“It’s getting better,” Griffin said. “This is kind of like a broken bone. You’ve got to let it heal, so I’m not moving it much outside of the splint.”

Griffin is eligible to return from the injured list on Sept. 4, which would put him on track to help this club over the final few weeks. If the Pirates can stay in the playoff race, Griffin’s return could help propel them forward.

Griffin has been taking things day-by-day, allowing the injury to heal in the best way it can. But it’s been a frustrating experience for the young star, especially with the team trying to get into the postseason.

“It’s tough just because we’re in the thick of it. We’re fighting hard, and I can’t really help,” Griffin said. “Just have to sit back and watch. But I believe everything happens for a reason, so I’m just trying to stay as ready as I can. So whenever I’m cleared to go, I can get back as fast as I can.”

Pirates Outlook For Remainder of 2026

Griffin has been a breath of fresh air for this Pirates team, with him showcasing all his talent before the injury. The 20-year-old has played in 59 games this season, hitting .276 with five home runs and 25 runs batted in, while putting up an OPS of .736.

His discipline at the plate, especially as a rookie, has been impressive, and is why the Pirates are so high on his future. Griffin has looked like a future superstar, so losing him for any stretch of time has hurt this team.

The additions at the trade deadline should only help Pittsburgh down the stretch. But getting Griffin back will be the biggest boost for this club, and maybe the postseason could be in their sights.
