Phillies-Pirates Trade Idea Sends All-Star Infielder to Pittsburgh for Hunter Barco

Wholesale changes might be on the horizon for the Philadelphia Phillies. After the Mets finally won on Wednesday, the Phillies now officially have the longest losing streak in MLB (eight games).

This is a team with World Series aspirations that is falling behind in ways that may be too hard to make up. Zack Wheeler is returning this weekend, which certainly should help, but does Philly need to start thinking about trades?

A recent trade proposal by SI.com’s Ethen Hutton features the Phillies and Pittsburgh Pirates linking on a deal that would send Alec Bohm to the Steel City in return for Yohan Ramirez, Jared Jones, and Hunter Barco (Pirates No. 4 Prospect).

Phillies Mock Trade of Alec Bohm Nets Three Players

In this hypothetical trade idea, the Phillies would net three players for Alec Bohm. Granite, neither of these names are proven MLB stars, but Alec Bohm is headed to MLB free agency after 2026 ends, and he is not doing what he’d like to secure a big payday. In 82 at-bats this season, Bohm is hitting .146 with 1 home run, and just 12 hits.

He’s not a player who hits for a lot of power, but his average usually hovers around the .280 mark, so hitting below .150 for this long of a stretch is not a good dislplay for Bohm in a contract year.

Hutton wrote about the trade idea:

“Jones is working his way back from injury, but is expected to suit up in late May after missing the entire 2025 season, while Barco is a high-upside prospect, expected to make his major league debut later this season. Bohm could bounce back in a big way with a trade to the Pirates. Pittsburgh has boasted one of the top offensive lineups in the majors this season, which ranks seventh in hits and 11th in home runs at this point of the season.”

Who Says ‘No’ To this Proposed Trade

Sorry Phillies fans, but there’s no way the Pirates would make this trade offer right now. Adding Bohm might be more harmful than fruitful to this Pittsburgh team that is actually hitting pretty well right now.

To give up a top-five prospect and two MLB-level players for a guy who likely ends up leaving in free agency? No thank you.

Instead, the Phillies should think about making a massive swing deal that includes Alec Bohm and some of their prospects for one of the top hitters on the market like Isaac Paredes.

It’s obviously early, but trade candidates will start to emerge in the next month or so, and Bohm could be a serious one if he can’t turn his hitting production around.
