Phillies Get Good News on Pitcher After Scary Spring Training Health Incident

It’s crunch time for the Philadelphia Phillies when it comes to putting the finishing touches on their Opening Day roster. While changes will be made throughout the season, you can bet that manager Rob Thomson wants his squad to get off on the right foot, which is why having the right combination of players at his disposal is important.

With the team set to make a final decision on some key players soon, they were dealt a scary update on Sunday involving pitcher Robert Daniel, as he suffered what the team labeled a “cardiac event” during a bullpen session. This is the second time Daniel has suffered this sort of ailment over the past six months, leading the team to provide some news on his health after this recent incident.

Robert Daniel ‘Stable and Alert’ After Recent Health Scare

Daniel was selected by the Texas Rangers in the 2017 MLB Draft, and he gradually worked his way up to the majors, where he made his major league debut in 2024 with the Rangers. In 2025, Daniel latched on with the Phillies, and he ended up appearing in 15 games, posting a 4.15 ERA with 15 strikeouts over 13 innings of work.

In October, Daniel collapsed while throwing a bullpen session at Philadelphia’s minor-league complex. In response to this incident, which required the team’s athletic trainers to administer life-saving CPR, Daniel had an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator surgically placed near his chest area, in the event this sort of incident ever took place again.

That’s what happened on Sunday, as Daniel was clutching his chest in pain thanks to another cardiac issue, which caused his new ICD to activate twice. Daniel was admitted to a hospital, where he was reported to be “stable and alert.” Thomson revealed that he has since been released, but regardless, this is another worrying situation for Daniel as he attempts to continue his baseball career.

“Phillies pitcher Daniel Robert was stable and alert after suffering what the team called a cardiac event while pitching in the bullpen Sunday,” Jim Salisbury wrote for NBC Sports Philadelphia. “Robert was treated by the team’s medical staff on the scene and boarded an emergency vehicle under his own power before being taken to a local hospital.”

At this stage of the game, the primary concern for the Phillies and Daniel has to revolve around his health. This is the second time in a six-month span something has happened, and in order for Philadelphia to put Daniel back on the mound in good conscience, it has to be sure that he is fully healthy and ready to pitch.

Before worrying about what the future holds for Daniel in baseball, the team will look to help him receive whatever medical treatment he needs in order to get back to full health. Whether or not Daniel was going to make the major-league roster to begin the year is inconsequential right now, as the primary focus needs to be on his health for the time being.
