Ahead of their series in Boston, the Phillies released Oscar Mercado from their organization.

He was on a Minor League deal, playing in Triple-A.

Mercado had been batting .141 with ten hits, one home run, six RBI’s, nine runs and three stolen bases in 24 games for the Lehigh Valley IronPigs.

He spent the first three and a half seasons of his career with the Cleveland Guardians.

Following the Guardians, Mercado had stints with the Phillies and St. Louis Cardinals.

Over 298 career games (across five seasons), the 31-year-old is batting .237 with 211 hits, 26 home runs, 100 RBI’s, 123 runs and 29 stolen bases.

Katie Woo of The Athletic wrote (during a game on May 21, 2023): “The Oscar Mercado game. With two outs and the bases full, Mercado connects for his third hit of the day and singles in two more runs. That’s five RBI for Mercado on the day, matching a career-high.”

Mercado could be a good low-risk addition for other teams around the league on a Minor League Deal.
