Pedestrian on Interstate 580 killed after being hit by vehicle near Richmond exit

RICHMOND — A vehicle hit and killed a pedestrian on a freeway early Thursday, the California Highway Patrol said.

The collision happened on westbound Interstate 580 near the Harbour Way exit, according to the agency. Officers were called to the scene about 1:25 a.m.

Authorities did not identify the person who died immediately, pending notification of their relatives.

The CHP did not say in its initial information whether the driver who hit the pedestrian stayed at the scene.

The CHP closed all westbound lanes of the freeway for about two hours to investigate, and issued a Sig Alert for severe traffic. All the lanes were back open at 4 a.m.
