Patriots Rookie QB Has Hilarious Comment About New Teammate

Behern Morton was drafted by the New England Patriots in the seventh round with the 234th overall selection in Saturday’s draft. Although he figures to be a developmental piece behind starting quarterback Drake Maye and second-string quarterback Tommy DeVito, he still has a hilarious perspective on his role with the team.

Morton played five seasons at Texas Tech from 2021-2025. He had success with the program, and was able to establish himself as one of the best passers in the Big 12.  That being said, he is ready to take his talents to the NFL. On top of this, he is also ready to do whatever it takes in order to help the Patriots, as Boston Sports Journal’s Mike Giardi reported on Saturday night.

“If he needs a coffee from Starbucks, I’ll get it for him.”

Newest Patriots QB Had Decorated College Career

Although he has a sense of humor, his play at the college level was no joke. He threw for 2,780 yards, 22 touchdowns, and six interceptions last season. This included a 66% completion percentage, and a passer rating of 154.6. He was able to finish off his college career in style after taking a redshirt season in 2021.

2024 was when he really broke out. He played at a high level, completing 295 passes out of 466 attempts. The attempts were the highest mark in his career. He finished with 3,335 passing yards and 27 touchdowns. The signs were there that he would be able to break out and become a premier passer for the red Raiders.

The 2025 season was just the cherry on top of the proverbial cake. He played with a hairline fracture in his leg, and still was able to be a playmaker. He posted a career-high 154.6 passer rating as well as a 66% completion rate. This included a game against Oregon State, where he threw for 464 yards and four touchdowns.

Morton Enters Crowded QB Room

Now, he will enter New England as a third-string quarterback. He will have some competition, as DeVito figures to be the second option in the room. The latter also has starting experience as well, as he recorded 1,101 yards, eight touchdowns, and three interceptions in 2023. The Patriots also made sure to keep him in the locker room, signing him to a two-year, $7.4 million deal in March.

This could be an opportunity for the Patriots to have a quarterback room with both veteran experience in the NFL and success at the collegiate level. Maye will obviously still be the starter for the organization. However, Morton gives them a solid safeguard option, and he also allows them to continue to build depth in the room.

The 2026 Patriots draft class was full of playmakers on both sides of the football, as well as selections to strengthen already strong units. Morton falls into the latter category. Even if he may not play right away, he knows what he has to do to help the team win. Sometimes, that means getting your star teammate and starting quarterback a coffee. As the old saying goes, “You have to start somewhere,” and that is especially true in the NFL.
