Patriots Rookie Makes One Thing Clear in First Message To Team

New England Patriots rookie edge defender Gabe Jacas was fired up to play for the organization and made a request to a Patriots coach on draft night.

Jacas was the second selection taken by the Patriots in the draft. The rookie now has an opportunity to provide much-needed edge help to the Patriots organization. He comes from Illinois, where he played collegially in the tough Big Ten conference. Now, he will look to continue the strong defensive tradition in New England

Many Patriots fans were excited by the pick on Thursday, and the edge defender was fired up himself. He Facetimed with a Patriots coach shortly after he was elected. He made a request to the coach that will have Patriots fans excited.

“What up, Coach?! Send me the playbook! I’m ready to go! I’m ready! Aye, I’m ready! I’m ready!”

Jacas Brings Pedigree To Patriots

Jacas played at a high level over the course of four seasons. The 2025 campaign was no exception. He led the Big Ten with 11 sacks during the regular season, a number that ranked sixth nationally. He started all 12 regular-season games, recording 43 tackles and three forced fumbles.  Jacas earned accolades for his efforts, including All-Big Ten First Team honors from the media. The edge rusher was also named a Phil Steele All-America Fourth Team selection.

The Illinois star was able to come out and clutch moments to solidify his status as one of the best addresses in the country. He recorded two sacks and a rivalry win over Northwestern, and another two sacks against Wisconsin. He also recorded six tackles in that late November contest.

Not only did he have an impact on a personal level, but he also made a major impact in the program. Jacas ranks second in Illinois history with 27 sacks for his career. This trailed only Simeon Rice with that number. He ranked ninth in Illinois program history with 35.5 tackles for loss. The defender also tallied 183 total tackles, which included 97 solo stops.

Jacas Fills Big-Time Need For Patriots

Now, the Patriots should be able to benefit from some of that production as well. He fills a major need on the edge, a positional spot they struggled with last year. K’Lavon Chiasson had 7.5 sacks for the team last season, but now he is a member of the Washington Commanders. They needed somebody to come and fill that spot. Jacas should be able to do that.

The edge position is one that the Patriots focused on in this draft. In addition to jackets, they were also able to get Boston College edge defender Quintayvious Hutchins. He should be able to help supplement Patriots edge production as well. The team saw a weakness there and immediately began to attack it.

At the very least, Jacas is ready to metaphorically attack opposing offenses. The Patriots needed to make some tweaks to an already-strong defensive unit. They were able to do that in a big way. It will be interesting to see how he fits into the team’s defensive plans, and how much of an impact he will make in his first year. Either way, Patriots fans should be excited.
