Patriots Get Projected Cost of Contract Extension for DB Christian Gonzalez

The New England Patriots made it official on Tuesday, picking up the fifth-year option on star defensive back Christian Gonzalez. Now, the real work starts as they look to work out a contract extension.

Looking into the deal, Spotrac co-founder and editor Michael Ginnitti estimated what Gonzalez is going to make. It isn’t a small deal at all, with Ginnitti writing, “The 23-year-old currently projects toward a 3-year, $85M extension in our system.”

Gonzalez was a first-round pick by the Patriots back in 2023, making him one of the last great picks by Bill Belichick in New England. Since then, he’s been named a Second-Team All-Pro selection in 2024 and a Pro Bowler in 2025.

In 34 career games, Gonzalez has 24 passes defended and 2 interceptions. He also has 145 total tackles.

What the New England Patriots Picking Up Christian Gonzalez’s Option Means

By picking up the fifth-year option for Christian Gonzalez, the New England Patriots locked him onto the roster through the 2027 season, at least. That’s with or without a contract extension. However, an extension could restructure the deal to help with the salary cap and keep him in New England beyond the 2027 season.

The cost of the fifth-year option is about $18.1 million. Effectively, that has put him on a two-year contract worth $20.9 million of fully guaranteed money.

None of that was a surprise. It had already been widely reported that the Patriots would be picking up his option. Given how well he’s played during his brief NFL career, anything else would have been a major surprise.

Ultimately, what this is going to do for the Patriots is buy the team some time to come up with a new deal. After all, given his age, at just 23 years old, as well as his station as one of the best lockdown corners in the entire NFL, he’s going to garner a massive contract. Getting it done won’t be easy.

Christian Gonzalez Could Reset the Cornerback Market

There are those who consider the Spotrac estimate of three years and $85 million to be a conservative estimate for what Christian Gonzalez could garner. Instead, there is a chance that he completely resets the market for corners.

As it stands now, Trent McDuffie of the Los Angeles Rams is at the top of the market. He signed a four-year, $124 million extension there this offseason. That amounts to $31 million annually. The Spotrac estimate is one less year and only about $28.3 million annually. So, it stands to reason that Gonzalez wants to top that.

Another comparable extension might be the one Sauce Gardner signed with the New York Jets in 2025. That was for four years and $120.4 million. Again, the deal is four years, a trend for these cornerback extensions, and over $120 million or $30 million annually.

So, it’s going to be expensive, but the general consensus around the NFL is that the Patriots are going to sign Gonzalez to that extension. At the same time, it does seem worthwhile to spend on him. Still, stranger things have happened if the team decides that price is too much to pay.
